How much garbage can a small island carry before it bursts at the seams?
How much longer can paradise hold?

Listen to the locals of Siquijor, the Healing Island, sound the alarm over the mounting piles of plastic waste trapped in their facilities. According to municipal environment officer Lhermie Areja, the town’s discipline in waste segregation can only do so much if none of the plastic they collect ever leaves the island. For municipal environment officer Paul Bantilan, Siquijor already has a solution on paper and only needs to bring it to life: the Provincial Ordinance that prohibits the use of some single-use plastics.

Let’s support Siquijodnons as they fight to protect their island paradise from the damage of plastic garbage and join the call to stop the production of single-use plastics at the source. Let us also be responsible tourists by bringing refillable bottles on our island vacations instead of buying plastic bottles and sachets.

The dugong - no rush, no stress, just vibing and munching on seagrass. All. Day.

Adult dugongs can eat up to 65kg of seagrass daily. But look at how it eats-it's actually grazing, pulling out the old seagrass and stimulating the growth of new ones. By satisfying its grassy cravings, the dugong actually helps maintain these healthy seagrass meadows that also support fish, sea turtles, and other marine life. 🐠🐢

Wouldn't it be nice if we could let these chill creatures feed in peace, without the threat of anyone harming them?

That's what the Calamian Tagbanua protect in their ancestral waters in Calauit, Busuanga. These waters act as safe spaces where marine species can thrive, protected through Indigenous stewardship, so there is no danger of getting caught in fishing nets or snagged by propellers. If we protect their home, we protect the dugong and all of its neighbors.

Here's hoping we all find that space where we, like the dugong, can just be our truest, chillest selves.

Ang masakit pa, dahil dito ni hindi na makapag-hanapbuhay ang mga pamilya, hindi na makapasok sa eskwela ang mga anak - mga karapatan natin bilang mamamayan, at kailangan natin para umangat sa buhay.

Basahin ang blog ni Oceana Vice President Von Hernandez tungkol sa tinatawag na mga “nature-based solution,” o mga solusyong natural nang matatagpuan sa kalikasan at hindi na kailangang gastusan pa ng bilyon-bilyon. Sa pagbaha, ang pinaka-mainam na nature-based solution ay ang mga mangrove o bakawan.

Kung hahayaan lang na manatili ang mga mangrove sa mga baybayin, at kung poprotektahan sila ng batas, sila na ang bahalang sumalag sa mga alon at magpatibay sa lupa para ‘di ito agad gumuguho at bumababa. Kung hayaan nating protektahan tayo ng mga mangrove, baka hindi na nagtin kailangan pa ang ilang bilyong pisong flood control project na alam natin ngayong kinukurakot lang pala ng maraming tiwali.

Paano natin poprotektahan ang mga mangrove na pumoprotekta sa atin? Suportahan natin ang pagpasa sa National Coastal Greenbelt bill, na mag-uutos sa lahat ng ahensya at mamamayan na panatilihing ligtas at mayabong ang mga mangrove sa dalampasigan ng Pilipinas.

Tapos ang naisip gawin ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) eh magbunot pa ng mangroves, na alam nating sumasangga ng mga papasok na storm surge at alon?

Matagal nang sinasabi ng mga eksperto: mangroves ang natural at libreng tagapagtanggol natin laban sa nakamamatay na mga storm surge. Sabi rin ng siyensya, karamihan sa mga mangroves na binubunot at nililipat (earth-balling), namamatay lang din. Naghahanap tayo ng solusyon - pero bakit nagdadagdag lang sila ng problema?

We're proud to stand with Panaon's fisherfolk, LGUs, and coastal communities who never stopped showing up for their waters.
