Embracing every detour to walk the path of heritage
In celebration of the honorable legacy built by generations before us, the Mu Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority held Via Hereditas: The Solita Camara-Besa Memorial Lecture last September 2, 2026, at the Ramon S. Ang Auditorium of the Henry Sy Sr. Medical Sciences Building. This marked the second installment of the Via Hereditas Memorial Lecture Series, which was launched last year.
The event was graced by the presence of distinguished alumni Brods and Sisses who came together to commemorate Sis Solita Camara-Besa, ฮผฮฃฮฆ 1938, a trailblazing physician-scientist who left an enduring mark on the Mu Legacy. She was the first Filipina to specialize in Biological Chemistry, now known as Biochemistry. Her research on the sodium and potassium content of Philippine foods helped establish standards for healthy Filipino diets.
Hosted by Sis Chloe Agnes, ฮผฮฃฮฆ 2030 and Brod Hans Carinugan, Mฮฃฮฆ 2029, the program began with opening remarks delivered by Sis Karen Ferrer, ฮผฮฃฮฆ 1982, Co-Chair of the Mu Sigma Phi Foundation Postgraduate Education Committee. Her message acknowledged the generations of Mu who came together to make the event a reality, setting the tone for an evening of fellowship, reflection, and camaraderie.
A special tribute by Sis Marita Tolentino-Reyes, ฮผฮฃฮฆ 1964 offered everyone a glimpse into Sis Solitaโs mentorship, leadership, and personality. Through her personal stories and anecdotes, Sis Solita was remembered not only for her remarkable contributions, but also for the person she was. Afterwards, our keynote speaker, Sis Carmencita David-Padilla, ฮผฮฃฮฆ 1981 shared her personal experiences with Sis Solita, as well as the lessons she acquired through the various detours she encountered throughout her life and leadership.
The program continued with parting words drawn from Sis Solitaโs memoir, Up Close with Me, challenging everyone to carry forward her wisdom, commitment to integrity, and call to be instruments of change. A Time Capsule, containing photographs and written memories from Brods and Sisses across generations, was also sealed with the help of the undergraduate Batch Leaders. It now stands as a testament to who we were, what we valued, and what we hoped Mu would become.
To cap off the program, Sis Cielo Porras, ฮผฮฃฮฆ 2027 shared her closing remarks and reflections on Sis Solitaโs life, bringing together the lessons of the past with the possibilities of the present and future.
Through Via Hereditas, we are reminded that heritage is not simply something we inherit; it is a path we continue to walk, shape, and pass on. As we look to the generations who came before us, may we carry their wisdom with us, embrace every detour along the way, and leave behind a legacy worthy of those who will come after.
We are immensely thankful for all the people who made the event possible and fruitful, most especially to our Brods and Sisses, partners, and sponsors.
