Believers are the church.
And you can absolutely worship God alone.
You can pray to God alone.
You can read and study the Bible alone.
But you can’t practice the habit of meeting together alone.
You can’t build one another up alone.
You can’t encourage each other alone.
You can’t serve others alone.
You can’t be baptized alone.
We are not called to be islands.
We are called to be of one accord.
I believe the devil wants you to think you don’t need to go to church.
And you absolutely don’t have to go to have a relationship with Christ.
But the devil knows the power believers have when they come together. And he doesn’t want that.
If you want to grow in your relationship with Christ; if you want to grow in your relationships with others, if you want to have deeper, more powerful worship, if you want to be blessed and filled with great joy, you can find all of this in a Bible-believing (and following) church.
Yes, there’s going to be people you don’t get along with there.
Yes, there’s going to be people who mess up there.
Because we are all human.
And we all mess up.
And we all sin.
But when you meet together with a group of imperfect people who are seeking God with their whole heart, there’s nothing like it.
Jesus told us he didn’t come to be served but to serve.
Being part of a church offers so many opportunities to use the gifts God has given you.
You can sing in the choir.
You can teach an adult class.
You can teach children’s church.
You can serve in a widow’s ministry.
You can help clean up.
You can cook.
You can make things.
You can rock babies.
You can mentor a teen.
You can start a prayer group.
You can play an instrument.
All the while, building relationships and loving and serving others.
If you’ve been hurt by the church, I’m sorry.
And I have too.
But it doesn’t change the fact that God told us to not give up meeting together.
It doesn’t change the fact that it’s important.
And what some people have done, doesn’t change my view of how good God is. And how faithful He is.
The Bible never claims meeting together is going to be easy and without challenges.
But it does tell us what the outcome of being obedient is…”And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.”
Acts 2:47
Here are a few more verses to consider:
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
Acts of the Apostles 2:42, 44, 46-47
And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:25
