People in Need (PIN) Philippines is an international non-profit organization founded in Czech Republic, and currently operating in over 20 countries worldwide. We reach out to the most marginalized sectors to provide humanitarian and development assistance. Our work in the Philippines began in 2013 as a response to the onslaught brought about by Super Typhoon Yolanda. Even after other organization

s had packed up their relief operations, we stayed to support sustainable livelihoods for local farmers who had lost their life's work during the storm. Ever since then, our mandate has evolved and spread to a variety of sectors, such as agriculture, disaster resilience, renewable energy and social cohesion. 🌊 190 seaweed producers. 7 community clusters. 7 seaweed demonstration farms.

Women, men and young people from 7 seaweed-farming clusters in Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi took part in a week of coaching and mentoring on regenerative seaweed farming, an approach that focuses on improving farming practices and how seaweed farms are managed.

They learned and practiced regenerative seaweed farming techniques while setting up 7 demonstration farms in Tapian Sokah, Tandubas. These farms will serve as training hubs where farmers can continue learning, practicing and sharing the techniques within their communities.

The activity is part of BAEP-LEAP’s (Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Programme-Leveraging and Expanding Agri-Aqua Production in Bangsamoro) work to strengthen seaweed livelihoods in the Bangsamoro by helping farmers access practical knowledge and approaches that can support more sustainable production. 🌱🌊

🚨 NEW PROJECT: Helping Tawi-Tawi Prepare for El Niño 🌊☀️

Communities in Tawi-Tawi will receive support to prepare for the forecasted impacts of El Niño through the Drought Anticipatory Action Project (DAAP) – Tawi-Tawi.

Supported through a £200,000 (approximately PHP 16 million) grant from the Start Fund of the Start Network, the project will be implemented by People in Need Philippines, Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc. and Tarbilang Foundation, Inc.

DAAP will support 3,000 households (around 15,000 people) across the island municipalities of Sitangkai, Sibutu, South Ubian, and Tandubas before drought conditions worsen.

Support will include:
💧 Improving access to safe water through rainwater harvesting and community water system repairs.
🌱 Protecting livelihoods through cash assistance and support for seaweed farming and home gardening.
📣 Providing climate information in local languages and training community health workers in Psychological First Aid.

By acting before the worst impacts are felt, the project aims to help communities protect their health, water supply, and livelihoods during the El Niño season.

Nearly two months after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Southern Mindanao, families on Sarangani Island are still living through its aftermath. Aftershocks, including several strong earthquakes continue to shake the area, making recovery even more challenging for communities working to rebuild their lives. 🌏

🤝 Together with our partners Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc., and MARADECA INC., we're continuing to reach remote communities in Mindanao with emergency support. Recovery is far from over, and many families still need assistance.

💬 A simple kumustahan prompted this reflection from participants during our Mental Health and Psychosocial Support ( ) and Psychological First Aid ( ) training.

🤝 For the 43 Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and Barangay Sanitary Inspectors from Barangays Gomtago, Tinina, Lipol, Camalig, and Laker, the training offered not only new knowledge and skills, but also an opportunity to pause, reflect, and check in on their own well-being.

Through the training, participants strengthened their ability to:
• 👂 Listen actively and empathetically to people affected by the earthquakes.
• 💙 Provide calm, compassionate support through PFA.
• ⚠️ Recognise signs of distress and identify those who may need additional care.
• 🤝 Promote safety, dignity, and hope during recovery.
• 🔗 Refer individuals to appropriate support services when needed.

🌿 Through the Relief for Earthquake-Affected Communities in Hard-to-Reach Mindanao (REACH-M) emergency response project, funded by our Club of Friends, we continue to strengthen the capacity of frontline community workers to provide compassionate support for people recovering from the recent earthquakes.

As part of our continued support for communities recovering from the recent earthquakes in Sarangani Island, we conducted a Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and Psychological First Aid (PFA) training for 22 frontline community workers in Barangays Batuganding and Tagen! 💙

Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and Barangay Sanitary Inspectors are now equipped with practical knowledge and skills to:
🔹 Recognize signs of distress
🔹 Provide initial emotional support
🔹 Safely refer individuals needing specialized care

Earthquakes leave impacts that go far beyond damaged homes. The uncertainty and repeated aftershocks can continue to affect people's sense of safety long after the ground stops shaking. By strengthening the capacity of trusted local volunteers, we help ensure that mental health and psychosocial support remain accessible within the community. This is made possible through the Relief for Earthquake-Affected Communities in Hard-to-Reach Mindanao (REACH-M) emergency response project, funded by our Club of Friends. 🌿

🌦️ Making (CIS) more locally relevant helps farmers and local agriculture officers use weather and climate information that reflects the conditions in their own communities.

Today, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform, BARMM, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of the Interior and Local Government, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist - Sulu, DOST-PAGASA Region XI, DA-Agro-Climatic Advisory Portal, provincial and municipal agriculture offices, and other key stakeholders came together for the Stakeholder Update and Pilot Implementation Workshop on (CIS) for coffee and seaweed farmers in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

💻 With support from our partner, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, the workshop piloted a digital Climate Information Services (CIS) platform developed to provide localized climate data and forecasts for coffee and seaweed farming. Through live demonstrations and hands-on exercises, participants tested the platform, shared feedback, and explored how it can strengthen agricultural planning and extension services across the Bangsamoro region.

🗺️ Participants also identified the next steps: refining the platform based on the needs of extension workers and farmers, defining partner roles for the technology handover, and developing a long-term roadmap to integrate the platform into government systems and ensure its continued improvement.

🌾 By strengthening collaboration between government agencies, technical partners, and local stakeholders, the initiative is helping make climate information more accessible and actionable, empowering coffee and seaweed farmers to make informed decisions, reduce climate risks, and build more resilient livelihoods.

The workshop is part of the Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Programme – Leveraging and Expanding Agri-Aqua Production (BAEP-LEAP), funded by the European Union in the Philippines and implemented by People in Need Philippines, MARADECA INC., and United Youth of the Philippines-Women.

☕ From the islands of Basilan and Sulu to the Manila Coffee Festival, our farmers are gaining the skills, exposure, and connections to bring Bangsamoro coffee to a wider audience.

🤝 Throughout the festival, they connected with roasters, buyers, and fellow producers while sharing the story behind the coffee they grow.

Together with Farm to Cup Philippines, our partner in strengthening the technical capacities of our coffee producers, we showcased the journey of Bangsamoro coffee, from bean to brew, and the people behind every cup.

This participation was made possible through the Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Programme – Leveraging and Expanding Agri-Aqua Production (BAEP-LEAP), funded by the Union in the Philippines and implemented by People in Need Philippines together with MARADECA INC. and United Youth of the Philippines-Women.

💧🏮Access to safe water and reliable lighting remains a priority for families on Balut Island. Weeks after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake and the recent typhoon, many households are still living without electricity and reliable access to safe water.

To support immediate recovery, we distributed water kits to 112 families and solar lights to 100 families in Barangay Mabila, Balut Island. Families also received a practical orientation on using Aquatabs for household water treatment and on the safe use of the solar lights, helping them make the most of the assistance while basic services remain disrupted.

The solar lights were provided through the generous support of ShelterBox helping extend assistance to remote island communities that are often the hardest to reach.

We thank all donors and partners for helping deliver essential support to families recovering from the earthquake.
