🌱 In Barangay Tapian Sukah and Barangay Butun in Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi, 200 seaweed-farming households received cash and in-kind livelihood assistance worth ₱3,500 per household to help meet immediate needs and protect their livelihoods from the potential impacts of drought and El Niño.

Seaweed farming is an important source of income for many families in Tawi-Tawi, but prolonged dry conditions can affect production, reducing household income and putting pressure on families’ daily needs. The support helps households manage these impacts while maintaining their livelihoods.

Alongside the assistance, families also received practical information on El Niño and drought, including:
🌦️ Latest weather forecast and what communities can expect
🌱 Possible impacts on livelihoods and food sources
☀️ Health impacts during prolonged dry and hot conditions
💡 Practical measures families can take to prepare and reduce the impacts

The distribution was conducted in partnership with the MAFAR Tawi-Tawi and the Tawi-Tawi Provincial Government.

The activity is part of the Drought Anticipatory Action Project (DAAP) – Tawi-Tawi, funded by the Start Fund of the Start Network and implemented by People in Need Philippines, Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc. and Tarbilang Foundation, Inc., supporting communities to take early action against the impacts of drought.

💧 For communities where access to water can become limited during dry periods, having water available at home can help families manage their daily needs and cope with shortages.

Through the Drought Anticipatory Action Project (DAAP) Tawi-Tawi, 280 households across Barangay Lahad Dampong, Tong Tampakan, and Tampakan Dampong in South Ubian received household water storage kits to help them store water for daily use and prepare for potential shortages. The activity was carried out in collaboration with the Tawi-Tawi Provincial Government and the Municipal Government of South Ubian.

Changing rainfall patterns and longer dry periods can make it harder for communities to access water when they need it. Taking action early helps families prepare for these changes, manage water shortages, and reduce disruptions to their daily lives.

Funded by the Start Fund of the Start Network, DAAP supports communities in Tawi-Tawi to prepare and take early action ahead of drought and potential water shortages. It is implemented by People in Need Philippines, Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc., and Tarbilang Foundation, Inc.

💧 As part of the Drought Anticipatory Action Project (DAAP) in Tawi-Tawi, 50 households in Barangay East Talisay and Tampakan Dampong, South Ubian received water filtration systems to help improve access to safer drinking water.

Access to household water treatment helps families take early action, prepare for potential water shortages, and maintain access to safer drinking water as drought conditions become more severe.

The distribution was carried out in collaboration with Waves For Water Philippines with support from the Tawi-Tawi Provincial Government and the Municipal Government of South Ubian.

Funded by the Start Fund of the Start Network, DAAP is being implemented by People in Need Philippines, Balay Mindanaw, and Tarbilang Foundation, Inc., with support from local government partners.

🧠 Drought preparedness also means ensuring that communities have the skills to support people experiencing stress and distress. 💙

Recently, 46 community responders and volunteers from Brgy. East Talisay and Tong, Tampakan; Tampakan Dampong; Lahad Dampong; and Sallogan, South Ubian joined a Community-Based Facilitators Training on Mental Health Awareness and Psychological First Aid (PFA).

The training strengthens local capacity to recognise signs of distress, provide basic psychosocial support, and respond appropriately during times of crisis, helping ensure that early action addresses not only the physical needs of communities, but also their psychosocial well-being. 🤝

This activity is part of the Drought Anticipatory Action Project – Tawi-Tawi, funded by the Start Fund of the Start Network and implemented by People in Need Philippines, Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc, and Tarbilang Foundation, Inc.

🌊 For seaweed farmers, improving production is also about understanding which cultivars perform better, how to handle seaweed after harvest, and how to maintain quality throughout the value chain.

To deepen their knowledge, 36 men, women, and youth took part in an exposure visit to the Mindanao State University Seaweed Research and Development Center. The visit gave an opportunity to learn about research, technologies, and practices that can help improve the quality and value of seaweed products, such as:

🌱 Seaweed cultivars and their characteristics
🧺 Post-harvest practices for better handling and quality
🧪 Carrageenan extraction and its potential value
💧 Moisture content and its role in assessing seaweed quality

The exchange between farmers and researchers helps bridge practical experience with scientific knowledge, giving communities useful information they can bring back to their own farms and apply in their seaweed production.

The exposure visit was conducted under the seaweed component of the Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Programme-Leveraging and Expanding Agri-Aqua Production in Bangsamoro project funded by the European Union, which supports seaweed-growing communities in strengthening their livelihoods and adopting improved and sustainable aquaculture practices.

📚 Our partner schools in the Sarangani Islands have received teaching packages and cash assistance to support ongoing education activities following the recent earthquakes.

Alongside the distribution, schools were oriented on lessons catch-up planning and integrated Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) awareness-raising. These sessions are helping schools plan how to address learning gaps while also supporting the well-being of children and other learners.

Through our Club of Friends, we continue to work alongside schools and communities to support learning recovery, promote children’s well-being, and help build safer and more resilient learning environments. 🤝📖
