People in Need (PIN) Philippines is an international non-profit organization founded in Czech Republic, and currently operating in over 20 countries worldwide. We reach out to the most marginalized sectors to provide humanitarian and development assistance. Our work in the Philippines began in 2013 as a response to the onslaught brought about by Super Typhoon Yolanda. Even after other organization

s had packed up their relief operations, we stayed to support sustainable livelihoods for local farmers who had lost their life's work during the storm. Ever since then, our mandate has evolved and spread to a variety of sectors, such as agriculture, disaster resilience, renewable energy and social cohesion. Our offices are located in Lanao del Norte, Northern and Eastern Samar and Quezon City. For more information about our work, please visit

Our producers from Basilan and Sulu are back at the booth today, meeting coffee lovers, cafรฉ owners, roasters, and fellow producers from different parts of the country.

Many visitors have stopped by to try our island-grown and coffees, ask about how they are grown, and hear the stories behind them. For our producers, the expo is not only a place to sell coffee, it is also a chance to introduce Basilan and Sulu to people who may be tasting coffee from the islands for the first time.

๐Ÿ“ As of Day 2, our producers have sold around 50 kilograms of coffee.

One coffee buyer said, โ€œI enjoyed tasting coffee from Basilan and Sulu, but what stood out most was getting to meet the producers and learn about the communities behind it.โ€

If youโ€™re at One Ayala, Makati, visit our booth and say hello to the producers behind these island coffees. โ˜•๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ

๐ŸŒฑ From conflict to coffee plantations
On the Philippine islands of Basilan and Sulu, coffee plants were long neglected. Due to years of instability and limited market access, farmers lost faith that coffee could still provide them with a sustainable livelihood.
With funding from the European Union in the Philippines, our team at People in Need Philippines are helping to revive the coffee industry in the Philippines. However, none of this would be possible without the local farmers โ€“ Ibrahim Uto and Ajahuli Ahajani tested new agricultural techniques on their own farms first, setting a powerful example for others.
๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ " The people here struggled at first. Some husbands and wives even argued," says Ahajani.
But the results didnโ€™t take long to show:
โœ…Coffee prices per kilo have increased
โœ…The region is no longer known for unrest, but for excellent coffee
โœ…Local people have reclaimed their livelihoods
โ˜• Read how coffee is bringing prosperity and peace back to the region:

On the islands of Basilan and Sulu, coffee was a quiet casualty of conflict. Farms were abandoned, trees left untended.

โ˜• What does it take to bring coffee farming back to life?

In and , local producers and community leaders are proving that revitalizing the coffee sector starts with people. Through training, farm rehabilitation, and stronger market connections, communities are improving coffee production and creating new opportunities for local livelihoods.

With support from the EU-funded BAEP-LEAP Project, producers are applying better agricultural practices, improving coffee quality, and inspiring others to return to coffee farming.

๐ŸŒฟWhat began as an exposure visit gave Ibrahim Uto from Basilan a deeper understanding of the growing market for coffee and its potential to help revive livelihoods in their community. Today, he is becoming a local champion for coffee, sharing the knowledge and practices he gained through training and exposure visits with fellow coffee producers in their community.

From good agricultural farm management practices and post-harvest handling to market linkages, the Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Programme โ€“ Leveraging and Expanding Agri-Aqua Production in Bangsamoro (BAEP-LEAP) Project continues to support the coffee and seaweed value chains across Bangsamoro.

The project is funded by the European Union in the Philippines and implemented by People in Need Philippines, MARADECA INC., and United Youth of the Philippines-Women.

In an island where access to hands-on skills training has often been limited, learning opportunities like barista training matter, especially for young people looking to build a future closer to home.

In Sulu, 27 participants, 24 of them youth, joined Barista 101 training facilitated by Farm to Cup Benguet. They were introduced to manual brewing, espresso machine operations, and milk-based coffee preparation.

From pour-over to espresso-based drinks, participants learned the craft behind every cup, gaining both skills and confidence along the way.

Small but steady steps in opening more practical learning spaces for young people in Sulu.

This initiative is part of the Bangsamoro Agri-Enterprise Programme - Leveraging and Expanding Agri-Aqua Production in Bangsamoro (BAEP-LEAP) project, funded by the European Union in the Philippines implemented by People in Need Philippines, MARADECA INC. and United Youth of the Philippines-Women to support the coffee and seaweeds value chain in Bangsamoro.
