"Unlocking Helaβs Potential Through Skills Development"
Despite PNGβs rich natural resources, communities like Hela have not always seen the benefits. Hides Gas Development Company (HGDC) is committed to changing that by investing in people and establishing an International Skills Academy in Hela Province.
HGDC is delighted to have signed a new JV agreement and MoU with Mapex Training Institute (MTI), a major step toward delivering essential training in Health & Safety, Plant Operations and Light Motor Vehicle driving directly in Hela through the new academy.
HGDC Chairman Libe Parindali emphasised the goal: creating real industry pathways that lead to employment and elevating national content to the next level. HGDCβs strategy, led by National Content & Business Development Manager Jason Riley prioritises local employment and builds a skilled workforce capable of taking on roles traditionally filled by expatriates, aligning with PNGβs National Content Policy.
To ensure world-class standards, HGDC and MTI are partnering with ECITB Global and BRITTOp (UK) to deliver training that meets both national and international benchmarks. Graduates will receive dual certification, boosting opportunities within PNG and abroad.
The first programs commence in January 2026, featuring a 12-week joint training and awareness rollout. While Hela is the initial focus, access will expand to the wider Highlands and eventually other regions.
HGDC and MTI are fully committed to developing the local project-affected people of Hela and building a brighter, more sustainable future for the province.
