The people of Aitape and the wider West Sepik Province will soon have safe and reliable sea access again, following the official launch of the K25 million Aitape Port Redevelopment Project.

Funded by PNG Ports as part of our nationwide Port Upgrade Program, the project will deliver a new main wharf and rehabilitated small ship facilities, improving the movement of cargo, passengers and essential goods, and giving local producers better access to markets.

𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲

Every ship that arrives in a Papua New Guinean port, whether it's a fuel tanker or a container vessel, depends on one important moment: a marine pilot stepping from a pilot boat onto the ship's ladder.

Marine pilotage has been a core job of PNG Ports Corporation Limited for more than 60 years.

Our pilot boat fleet started in 1963 with small aluminium harbour craft. In 1985 came Dovin, one of our first purpose-built pilot boats. Today, our re-fleeting programme of about A$11 million, in partnership with the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP), is delivering seven custom-built vessels. Four of them, Siabo, Davage, Paga and Kasali, are already in service and the rest are planned to be operational by the end of 2026.

These boats, and the skilled team behind them, help keep the nation's trade moving, protect lives and support Papua New Guinea's growth as a maritime nation.

PNG Ports Corporation proudly joins the global maritime community in celebrating World Maritime Day, recognising the dedication and contributions of all who work across the industry.

As Papua New Guinea’s leading port operator, PNG Ports manages 15 of the country's 23 declared ports, facilitating the movement of more than 10.8 million tonnes of cargo annually. These ports support approximately K29 billion, equivalent to 22 percent of Papua New Guinea’s GDP, highlighting the vital role maritime transport plays in driving national trade and economic development.

This year's theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” reflects the industry's commitment to turning strategic maritime policies into tangible actions that enhance safety, efficiency, sustainability, and service delivery.

Musangu II has arrived in Papua New Guinea and is completing final safety and registration checks before entering service.

The vessel is the fourth of five pilot boats delivered through the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific (AIFFP) and is part of PNG Ports' Pilot Boat Re-fleeting Program.

Once operational, Musangu II will support marine pilots at Madang Port and help to keep shipping moving safely and reliably.
