🎨🕊️ Friends of POMGEN Bridging the Gap: Special Donation Honors the Late Artist Michael John 🕊️🎨

The team at Friends of Port Moresby General Hospital (FOPG) is deeply privileged to have stepped in to coordinate and facilitate a vital donation of 10 brand-new wheelchairs to the POMGEN TB Ward. This meaningful initiative was organized to honor the memory of one of Papua New Guinea’s finest artists and illustrators, the late Michael John, acknowledging the dedicated care he received at the hospital.

Through our active network of community support, Friends of POMGEN worked closely with hospital staff to ensure these essential mobility assets were delivered right to the front lines of patient care, turning a powerful legacy of art and love into practical, life-changing support.

💬 Heartfelt Gratitude from the Ward
TB Ward Coordinator, Fransisca Muru, warmly welcomed the Friends of POMGEN team and expressed her profound gratitude for the coordination and support: "We are truly grateful for this generous donation. These wheelchairs will greatly assist both our patients and staff, and we sincerely thank the donor for their compassion and support. Wheelchairs are among the most needed pieces of patient transport equipment in the ward, helping staff safely move patients to diagnostic services, treatment areas, and bathroom facilities."

📖 Originally from Siligerua village in Chimbu, Michael John was a world-class visual storyteller who illustrated close to 20 books used today by school children across PNG. His art reflected his character—compassionate, funny, thoughtful, and deeply human.

While our nation mourns a remarkable man, Friends of POMGEN is honored to help ensure that his spirit of care continues to bring dignity, mobility, and comfort to patients right here at POMGEN. ✨

👶🍼 ONE CALL AWAY: Answering an Urgent Plea for Our Littlest Patients 🍼👶

This morning, Friends of POMGEN stepped in to support the Postnatal Ward at Port Moresby General Hospital after an urgent request for newborn essentials. With births increasing daily, the ward faces a growing need for supplies.

Senior Sister Bamo shared a heartbreaking reality: many mothers arrive completely unprepared, without even the basics to welcome their newborns. The ward is in critical need of:
✨ Baby diapers and nappies
✨ Baby blankets
✨ Infant formula milk

Thanks to the generosity of our kind-hearted donors, Friends of POMGEN has truly become a “one call away” lifeline for POMGEN staff. Today, we were able to hand over two boxes of emergency diapers to Sr. Bamo to help fill this gap immediately.❤️

We are deeply grateful to everyone who supports our mission. Because of you, no newborn has to go without comfort and dignity.

🌸At the Special Care Nursery (SCN) at Port Moresby General Hospital (PomGen),🏥👶🏻🇵🇬 premature, underweight, and critically ill newborns receive life-saving care including oxygen support, incubators, antibiotics, and continuous monitoring. Mothers stay close while nurses provide 24/7 care in one of PNG’s busiest referral hospitals.

PNG’s neonatal mortality rate is estimated at around 24 deaths per 1,000 live births. At PomGen, about 10% of babies require special care due to prematurity, low birth weight, or complications. The SCN often manages 30–40 babies at any time, with 45–55% showing early signs of clinical deterioration within the first 72 hours.

Common challenges include prematurity, low birth weight (often under 2kg), breathing difficulties, infections, feeding problems, and temperature instability.

The unit continues to operate under pressure due to limited incubators, oxygen and monitoring equipment, overcrowding, and shortages of basic supplies such as nappies, wipes, blankets, and formula for special cases.

Despite these challenges, the SCN team continues to save many newborn lives every year. Every small donation or support directly improves survival chances for vulnerable babies in Papua New Guinea. 💙

The University of Papua New Guinea 3rd‑Year Social Work students are gaining meaningful, hands‑on exposure as they engage directly with patients in real‑life settings. Over the past two months, they have become familiar faces at Friends of POMGEN, arriving daily with patient request forms seeking basic supplies and essential support.

These moments go beyond routine requests they reveal the ongoing struggles many patients face in accessing even the most basic necessities. Through this experience, the students are not only building professional skills, but also cultivating compassion, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the realities within our healthcare system.

✨ This is where learning meets humanity. ✨
