🚨🚨 NATIONAL CHAMPS UPDATE!! 🚨🚨

The National Championships are NOT being held in Hawke’s Bay anymore.

We understand this may come as difficult news for some as travel/accommodation plans were already made.

Our focus is to give certainty of where Nationals will be, so Boxing NZ are actively seeking a NEW ASSOCIATION to deliver the 2026 National Championships.

The association needs to:
1. Have the structure, personnel and operational capacity to deliver a National Championship to standard.
2. Be registered under Internal Affairs to host boxing tournaments.

Please get in contact with the office urgently at [email protected]

Darryll Head now a life member of Canterbury Boxing Association

Congrats Darryll πŸ‘πŸ‘ well deserved!

Canterbury Boxing Association is proud to announce and celebrate three new Life Members – a well-earned recognition of years of dedication, service, and passion for our sport πŸ‘

πŸ₯Š Nick Watson
Nick’s contribution to boxing in North Canterbury spans over two decades. From founding the Waikuku Boxing Club in 2002 and building its home in the Waikuku Domain, to his many years serving on the CBA committee (including as Vice President), Nick has played a huge role in growing Olympic-style boxing in our region. As a coach and mentor, he has guided athletes to national titles and elite-level success, leaving a lasting mark on the sport and the people within it.

πŸ₯Š Darryll Head
Darryll has been the backbone behind the scenes for over 20 years, serving as a dedicated timekeeper and trusted official across countless events. A true custodian of the ring, his reliability, knowledge, and commitment to boxingβ€”particularly through Woolston Boxing Clubβ€”have made him an invaluable part of our community.

πŸ₯Š Glennon β€œCooky” Cook
Cooky’s involvement in boxing dates back to the early 1980s, contributing through the Burnside Boxing Gym and beyond. Known for always going the extra mile, he has supported Canterbury Boxing in many rolesβ€”from committee work to assisting with events and ring duties. Even after health challenges, Cooky has remained involved, continuing to give back wherever he can, including helping establish the Leithfield Boxing Club in 2020.

These three individuals represent the very best of our boxing communityβ€”commitment, humility, and a genuine love for the sport.

Congratulations Nick, Darryll, and Cooky. Your Life Memberships are richly deserved πŸ‘Š

Huge props to Reece and the team at for putting on another top-quality amateur boxing event πŸ‘

Isaia was back in the ring this weekend against a familiar opponent β€” a rematch from the Novice Champs just a couple of weeks ago. It was a closely contested bout, with both boys leaving everything in the ring.

Isaia showed real growth this time around, landing strong straight punches through the guard and using improved footwork and angles. A much more polished performance and a clear step up from his last outing.

The judges awarded the decision to his opponent for his pressure and combination punching, but we couldn’t be prouder of the way Isaia fought.

On to the next one ☝🏽

South Island Novice Champs πŸ₯Š

Delayed post but better late then never! Massive shout out to all the sponsors, supporters, volunteers, officials and of course Atheltes for making the weekend awesome!

What a weekend for the team β€” a mix of debuts, tough battles, and standout performances. Couldn’t be prouder of every boxer who stepped through the ropes and represented the club.

Caleb kicked things off having his debut, showing grit all the way to the final bell. Nico delivered a polished, all-round performance to secure a unanimous decision win. Melody also made her debut in an exhibition, showing great movement, defence, and combinations.

Cyrus put on his best performance to date, controlling the bout with range, movement, and sharp combinations for the win. Josh brought his usual explosive style, going toe-to-toe in a tough contest that didn’t go his way this time β€” but always leaves it all in the ring.

Ioli and Isaia both faced strong opposition, showing toughness, composure, and plenty of skill in hard-fought bouts β€” valuable lessons that will only sharpen them for what’s next. Greg rounded out our debutants, showing heart and determination against a tricky opponent, gaining great experience for the future.

And finally, Erick β€œThe Dentist” Carreno β€” a dominant performance ending in a 3rd round stoppage, showcasing precision, pressure, and power. A well-earned Mark Graham Memorial Trophy for Woolston boxer of the tournament πŸ‘

Wins or losses, every boxer gained something this weekend. Back to work, onward and upwards πŸ’ͺ
