3️⃣0️⃣ YEARS OF PROJECT KIWI 🎉This isn’t just another newsletter. It’s a pretty special one.

Project Kiwi is celebrating 30 years.

It started with a yarn between locals, a shared concern for the kiwi on the Kūaotunu Peninsula, and a community willing to roll up its sleeves and do something about it.

What followed was trapping, experimenting, monitoring, science, innovation, plenty of things that worked ,and plenty that didn’t and thousands of people who helped along the way.

Our Spring 2026 Newsletter takes a look back at that journey: where Project Kiwi began, what we learnt along the way, and how a small community-led idea grew into 30 years of kiwi conservation.

And most importantly, it’s a chance to say thank you to everyone who has been part of the story.

30 years. Thousands of helping hands. One pretty remarkable journey.

A WEEKEND OF BIODIVERSITY EXPLORATION - COME ONE AND COME ALL!

Join our community event where scientists, students, and everyday people will be working together to find and count as many plant, animal, and fungus species as possible.

Based out of Harataunga marae with accommodation and food available, this is an awesome opportunity to explore an isolated and incredibly special slice of the Hauraki-Coromandel region. Use your skills to help build the first ever snapshot of biodiversity at Harataunga.
The site spans remnant forests, wetlands, rivers, saltmarsh and the coastal marine area, so we need all types of keen conservationists involved.

More information will follow.

A weekend of biodiversity exploration! Come along and help build a species list for Harataunga. Join for the weekend or even a few hours to see what it's about

Tonight is the first night of the kiwi call survey across the Kūaotunu Peninsula. People and acoustic recorders will be listening across 20 sites to record kiwi calls between 6:00 and 8:00pm Friday through Sunday.

This will help us understand where kiwi are living - population growth, decline and dispersal - and identify areas where kiwi are living where no predator control in place. The predator we target through trapping to support kiwi chick survival is the stoat.

Below is a recording of a female kiwi call taken from recording software by Lisa Kearney.
