19 September | Suffrage Day
On this day in 1893, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world where women won the right to vote in parliamentary elections.
It was a milestone built by people who spoke up, organised, persisted — and believed their voices could make a difference.
More than 130 years later, women continue to lead, serve, advocate and strengthen communities across Aotearoa.
Within Lions, we see that every day — women leading Clubs, organising projects, supporting causes, mentoring others and helping turn ideas into action.
A voice can change a nation.
Service can change a community.
Today, we acknowledge the women who helped shape our past — and the women helping shape our future.
