Bringing awareness to the Karearea, as "Bird of the Year" has initiated a couple of locals mentioning that they have sighted the NZ Falcon (size is comparable to a pigeon for males and a magpie for females. ) in Cooks Beach recently. Have you spotted one?

Mercury Bay Day Camp’s ‘DOC Wildlife Heros’ elective was a hit with the children in the school holidays. Working with Cheyenne and Ainsley from the Whitianga DOC office enabled the children to engage in sights, sounds, smells and the adventure of discovering native bird species, predators in our environment, setting traps and identifying pest footprints in monitoring tunnels. And Yes, they did catch some rats! Thanks to DOC for facilitating this well planned activity with us.
