💜A Huge BBBS Welcome to Viola & Lilly! 💜

We’re so excited to officially welcome VIOLA (Mentor) and LILLY (Mentee), our second school-based match at Mercury Bay Area School🎉

Their match meeting was the perfect start to what we know will be a wonderful mentoring journey. Lilly proudly showed Viola around her school, pointed out her artwork displayed on the walls, and even convinced her to give the playground’s famous “arm breaker” a go! 😄

If you know Viola, you’ll know she’s creative to her core, so seeing Lilly share her art made for a special first connection. We can’t wait to see the ideas, creativity, and confidence that will grow as these two spend time together.

As Coromandel’s one and only one-to-one mentoring charity, we’re proud to create meaningful, long-term mentoring relationships that help young people feel supported, valued, and empowered to reach their potential.

Three catch-ups. That’s all it’s taken to see a remarkable shift.

When this match first began, our young person was very quiet and found it difficult to express what they liked, disliked, or wanted to do. Conversations were short, and preferences often stayed hidden.

Fast forward just three outings, and they’re now confidently sharing ideas, suggesting activities, and talking about what they’d like to do next. From surf casting at the beach to suggesting a game of softball for the next catch-up, their voice is beginning to shine through.

This is the power of one-to-one mentoring.

Sometimes the biggest changes aren’t the loudest ones. They’re found in the growing confidence to speak up, share an opinion, and feel heard by someone who genuinely cares.

Connection builds trust. Trust builds confidence. And confidence opens doors.

It was wonderful to hear how Alex and Paisley enjoyed their first school catch-up together.

These early moments are all about building trust, sharing experiences, and creating a positive connection. It’s amazing to see the beginning of what we hope will be a meaningful friendship.

We’re incredibly grateful to Smash P**i for getting behind Big Brothers Big Sisters of Coromandel and supporting our mentoring matches.

Not only have they generously offered a free hot chocolate or hot drink for mentors and young people during their catch-ups now and again but they’ve also welcomed the idea of a BBBS games box being available for those rainy-day visits.

These small acts of kindness make a big difference, helping create warm, welcoming spaces where relationships can grow and young people can feel valued and connected.

We spent the day carrying out mentor supervision, meeting prospective new mentors, networking with local organisations, and popping into the local school to catch up with one of our young people.

Every conversation helps us grow our mentoring community and create more opportunities for local rangatahi to thrive.

A huge welcome to our newest match, ALEX (mentor) and PAISLEY (mentee)! 💜✨

This is our very first Mercury Bay Area School match, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Paisley took Alex to her favourite place in the whole school, the library!📚

As they explored the shelves, Paisley handed Alex a book and said:

“You can hold this book because you’re a Big Sister at BBBS Coro.” 💜

A simple moment, but such a beautiful reminder of what mentoring is all about. Trust, connection, and having someone special by your side.

We can’t wait to watch this friendship grow.
