UPDATE: The Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Wellington City has been extended until 10:52 am.

⚠️⛈️ SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING – WELLINGTON CITY ⚠️⛈️

MetService has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Wellington City, valid until 10:07 am today, Saturday 25 July.

Severe thunderstorms have been detected near Wellington and Wellington Airport and are moving east-northeast. These thunderstorms are expected to bring torrential rain.

⚠️ Torrential rain can cause surface and flash flooding around streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.

As the storms approach, people should:
• Take shelter indoors, away from windows.
• Avoid sheltering under trees if outside.
• Get back to land if outdoors on the water.
• Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
• Secure any loose objects around your property.
• Check that drains and gutters are clear.
• Be ready to slow down or stop if driving.
• Avoid streams, drains and waterways.

During and after the storm, watch for fallen trees and power lines.

Keep an eye on the weather and visit https://www.metservice.com/warnings/home for the latest updates. Note that AI-generated summaries can contain significant inaccuracies. Check MetService directly for the latest information.

Take care,
