Te Wiki Kaumātua - Seniors’ week is almost here and we have lots of fun activities lined up for our Seniors' to enjoy! We still have places available on our Free Heartbeat CPR Training Programme run by Wellington Free Ambulance contact us to enroll and for more information. Now we have a wonderful defibrillator in the local shopping area, it really important that we all know how to use it!

Monday 12th October 12noon – 1.30pm
Shared Community Lunch (Free):
Meet your neighbours, have a chat and enjoy delicious food. Feel free to bring something to share if you can. ​

Tuesday 13th October 11.30am – 1pm
Heartbeat CPR Training Programme: (Free)
Learn potentially lifesaving skills at our free programme, brought to you by Wellington Free Ambulance. Bookings essential, contact Island Bay Community Centre

Thursday 15th October 9.45am – 11.30am
Mystery walk will take you to Wellington Botanic Gardens (weather permitting)
Join other new and experienced walkers, starting at the Community Centre.
Please be on time to meet at 9.45am as the group will be getting the bus and cable car to the Botanic gardens.

Thursday 15th October 1.30pm – 2.30pm
U3A guest talk with Steven Dyhrberg from Westpac Bank on "Recognising Online Scams and Staying Safe Online"​ (Free)
This special University of the Third Age talk will be followed by tea and biscuits.

Update: the Funeral is on this Saturday the 19th of September, 10.30am at the Island Bay Presbyterian Church
It is with great sadness that the Local Island Bay Community has heard the news of the passing of Annette Moffat.
A remarkable local who gave so much to the community in so many different ways.
Arohanui to all Annette's family and friends at this sad time. 💜

Give it a go and start with some of the place names below!

Kia ora koutou! Nau mai haere mai ki Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori! The theme of Māori Language Week this year is Te Reo Towns. Here are a few phrases for you:
Nō hea koe - where are you from?
He aha te ingoa Māori o tō tāone? What's the Māori name of your town?
Ko Pukehuia te ingoa Māori o Newlands - Pukehuia is the Māori name for Newlands!
And the Māori name of Newlands Community Centre is Te Pokapū Hapori o Pukehuia.

Monthly Movie Magic is on today, Wednesday, at 1pm. So, why not come down and watch a free movie! Todays movie stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson based on a true story about a couple who have a band called Thunder & Lightening. This band sings the songs of a famous singer! Want to find out more? Come on down we have free tea, coffee and biscuits waiting.
