Have you been thinking about becoming a Kōanga member?

As we head into fruit tree planting season, we are offering a special discount to support our community.

All members can now receive 30% off fruit trees and support trees.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to add heritage fruit trees and the support species they need, while thinking carefully about what you want your home food system to provide in the years ahead.

Fruit trees, berries, grapes and support species are not short-term crops. They are long-term foundations for your garden, orchard or food forest.

There are still some beautiful heritage apple trees available from the Kōanga nursery.

These are old apple lines that have been held, grown and cared for so they can continue to be planted in home gardens, orchards and food forests across the land.

Apples have always been an important food security crop, especially the varieties that keep well. Many supermarket apples are held in chillers for long periods. In a home orchard, choosing apples that naturally store well means you can keep eating your own fruit long after harvest.

There are still good numbers of a few varieties, including Bill Rodgers, Worcester Pearmain, Red Spy, Lord Nelson, Winesap, Taiamai’s Best and Reinette de Canada, along with smaller numbers of other special lines.

Winter is the time these open-ground fruit trees are lifted and sent out while dormant, ready to be planted and settle in before spring growth begins.

If you are planting a home orchard, adding fruit trees to your food forest, or thinking seriously about your family’s future food security, this is a good time to choose the trees you would love to grow.

Availability varies between varieties, with some lines now very limited.

You can find the available apple trees on the website now:

This week, we are running a giveaway for a MicroBIOMETER kit worth $529 NZD, generously donated by one of our members.

Everyone who purchases an online workshop, or pre-orders the upcoming Seed Saving Online Workshop, before Sunday night will go into the draw to receive it.

Winter is the time to slow down, learn, plan, and prepare for the next growing season, so this is a perfect opportunity to deepen your knowledge and get ready for the year ahead.

Our online workshops share practical Kōanga knowledge for growing nutrient-dense food, saving seed, building soil fertility, and creating resilient home food systems.

MicroBIOMETERs measure microbe levels in your soil, compost and liquid fertilisers, as well as the ratio of bacteria to fungi, helping you better understand what is happening in your soil biology and make more informed decisions for your garden.

A heartfelt thank you to the member who donated this gift.

Our first drop of seed potatoes is being released tomorrow, Monday 25 May.

They will be available to members only for the first three days before being opened up to everyone else. Members can join the waitlist now to be notified as soon as they go live on the website.

These are very old potato varieties collected from gardens across the North and South Islands, Stewart Island and the Chathams. Many have been saved and selected in New Zealand gardens for generations, then carefully grown and maintained by Kōanga for more than 30 years.

Our seed potatoes are grown in living soil, without toxic sprays or industrial inputs, and selected for health, resilience and reliable cropping. They are an important part of a serious food security garden, and they always move quickly.

This is the first potato release for the season, with another drop coming in a few weeks’ time.

Heritage Garlic and Onions - available now while stocks last!

The window has opened for our autumn collection of garlic and perennial alliums. These are the dependable varieties that once grew in every family garden - the ones our grandparents relied on because they were hardy and nutrient-dense, nourish the soil, and offer deep nourishment to our bodies.

Perennials are the backbone of a resilient garden - once planted, some of them return year after year, offering reliable harvests and building long-term abundance, feeding you and your whānau for a lifetime.

A sneak peek of some items now in the Shop:

- Heritage Garlic: Rocombole Early Red & White - acclimatised and full of flavour.

- Perennial Onions: Tree Onions, Shallots, and White Potato Onions.

- The Rarest Lines: We are excited to make our rarest lines, like Ruby Red Garlic, available to everyone this season!

Numbers are limited, so do get your orders in quickly!
