Introducing Tītoki Academy 🌳📗

Tītoki Landcare’s mission is to do as much as possible to have a positive impact on Aotearoa’s indigenous biodiversity. Moving forward with our socials content we are going to be sharing information on how people can maximise impact.

There are four topics (pou) we will be covering, one of these is 'Tītoki Academy' where we will share our knowledge about biodiversity and restoration tools and techniques.

We have loved the enthusiasm and support for our '100 plants in 100 days' series! It has been great to hear the info we have shared is helpful and inspires us to know people care and want to learn about NZ's amazing biodiversity and how to restore it.

Day 100 - Tītoki (Alectryon excelsus)

- Broadleaf tree with pinnately compound leaves

- Young plants have toothed leaves, larger trees have toothless (entire) leaf margins

- Is a bit frost sensitive so needs to be planted with some shelter from frost or as larger specimens

- Otherwise a pretty hardy plant

Day 99 - Kohia/NZ passionflower (Passiflora tetrandra)

- Glossy native vine with tendrils and small orange fruit

- Grows to about 10 m high

- Prefers a bit of shelter so not typically a problem on early restoration sites

- Not often reintroduced to restoration sites but can be grown from seed or cuttings

Day 98 - Shining spleenwort (Asplenium oblongifolium)

- Common ground fern in forests

- Shiny pinnate frond with small teeth

- Aspleniums have their spores arranged in long, linear sori on the underside of the frond with a thin flap (called an indusium) covering the sori

- Not usually reintroduced to site because it is so good at dispersing itself

Day 97 - White maire (Notelaea neolanceolata)

- Native tree with long, narrow leaves, particularly as a juvenile

- Pale midrib/vein along the leaves and pale underside of leaves

- Not planted very often in restoration projects but could be planted more in enrichment planting

Day 96 - Native broom (Carmichaelia australis)

- Native shrub in the legume family - related to gorse, European broom, kōwhai, peas and beans

- Leafless plant with modified photosynthetic stems

- Light demanding plant but doesn’t like too much exposure to the elements so needs a bit of shelter

- Classified as ‘At Risk’ of extinction due to its declining population
