Through our activity choices, girls are encouraged to reach their potential, be independent, confident and caring. We empower them to give leadership and develop their decision-making and life skills. Young Mariners helps them connect with their community and with the wider world. Mariners vs. parents night was a hit! ⛵️
Last night our senior girls organised a challenge night where teams had to face off in quizzes, games and some physical challenges. The girls dressed as their parents and parents as their kids which made for a whole lot of confusion and some of the adults embracing their teenage attitudes 😅
There was a lot of laughs, dancing, singing and some very questionable acting, but overall was such a fun night!

Last Thursday we had our second session with Equillibrium Martial Arts. The girls learnt kicks and more on how to get out of difficult situations.
Thanks to Chris, Deb and Izzy, you guys are amazing instructors! The girls learned lots and really enjoyed the practical training💪

Last night the girls had a self defence session with Equillibrium Martial Arts.
They learnt about spatial awareness, how to strike and a how to help themselves stay safe against attacks.
We're looking forward to learning more next week!!

Last week we had a visit from past Mariner Keryn who was a Young Mariner with Rotorua between 1993 and 2002. She even brought in her jersey and took part in colours back on her original watch!

Tonight we worked towards our coxswain and helmsperson badges. We started with a collection of items and the girls had to choose which they would take on the boat - items included the usual suspects, as well as some random ones like socks, plug for the kitchen sink, or a plug in heater ⚓️🧦

All the girls then took part in a 'Lifejacket runway' where they put their jackets on and others pointed out what was wrong (zips or buckles done up wrong or sometimes the entire jacket on backwards or upside down) 🛟

Following this the girls acted out some emergency scenes. They were given a scenario each which they acted out and then acted out how to deal with it including person overboard, swamping, Collison and a crew with sea sickness ⛵️

After this we created a make shift cutter and practiced rowing commands followed by a discussion on what makes a good crew and how to be a respectful crew member 🚣‍♀️

A big night with lots of action!

On Thursday night the girls got creative in the kitchen, making scones and Young Mariner themed pizzas. We had starfish, sunsets, anchors and boats and they all looked delicious! 🍕

Last week the girls heard from our senior mariner Tatum about her trip on the spirit last school holidays⛵️⚓️
It was so awesome to hear about her adventures and inspired some other girls to aim for their own trips. Thank you Tatum!

We then refreshed some of our first aid skills including packing first aid kits, practicing CPR and dealing with various injuries 🩺
