Awesome to see rangatahi thriving in full-time mahi within a café where te reo Māori is spoken and celebrated. What a beautiful example of mahi, manaakitanga and te ao Māori coming together 🌿☕️

Titiro ki tenei mahi 👀

Rotorua is about to become home to what appears to be Aotearoa’s first total immersion reo Māori café.

Rumaki Café is set to open during Matariki 2026, creating a space where te reo Māori won’t just be welcomed — it will be the primary language spoken.

According to Rumaki’s website and page, the kaupapa is focused on normalising te reo Māori in everyday spaces — turning something as simple as grabbing a coffee into a full immersion reo experience.

And they’re building the team right now.

Rumaki is currently looking for:
☕ Reo Māori speaking kaimahi
👨‍🍳 A chef
☕ A barista
📱 A social media/content expert

Training will be provided where needed — but applicants must already have te reo Māori.

And the menu? That’s being designed by renowned Māori chefs Kārena and Kasey Bird, adding even more mana to the kaupapa.

From kura to cafés, te reo Māori continues to move into everyday life in bold new ways.

Rumaki isn’t just opening a café — it’s helping create a future where te reo is spoken everywhere.

Now that’s mana.

Drop us a ❤️ and give us a 👍 if you agree and tag someone you know who you would have a reo māori coffee date with!
