I caught up with our good mates at Rotorua Hunting and Fishing the other day and for you punters getting here good and early for opening, get along to this! Stock up on your tackle box goodies and get the intel to give you a chance to take on the man…I’ll let the arguments mull over who that may be 😉

Tear down the wall! Or at very least, this time create sufficient and effective fish passes. When the wall was originally built the Ohau Channel became a desert as first the smelt, then the trout failed to find their way up to the key spawning areas in lake Rotorua and its tribs. The quality of the fish in lake Rotorua severely deteriorated as the smelt they feed on disappeared. Over the last few years, as the wall has deteriorated and holes opened up, smelt found their way back up. The trout followed and the health and population of fish in Ohau Channel and quality of the fish in Rotorua has massively improved again. Do the ecosystem a favour and if you are going to repair it, do it right with sufficiently researched and effective fish passes so we don’t see a repeat of the lessons from the past on the quality and biomass of the fish stocks… please! 🙏 Eastern Fish & Game

Lake advocates say the work falls short of a commitment to fix the wall and accuse the council of delaying action while the structure corrodes away. 👇
