Our friends from Te Piki Oranga have worked with the Wright Family Foundation and The Village NZ to organise Mana Up here at VCC on Thursday the 29th of October. Mana Up is a community-based kōrero led by Pio Terei, that uses honest stories, humour, cultural connection, and practical tools to inspire positive change. We think that this is a really important campaign. We have signed this letter to the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and encourage your organisation to sign as well. There is also an email template available through the link below that you can use to share your thoughts on this proposal. Deadline is tight. Please sign by next Tuesday the 6th. Thanks to Kōtuitui for leading this kaupapa.

We need to retain our locally based advisors and encourage DIA to pause this proposed restructure and meaningfully engage with communities that will be affected by these changes. There are currently two local DIA staff and they do incredible work. They support new and emerging groups, they hold positive relationships across Te Tau Ihu, they are knowledgeable and have strategic nous. They cannot be replaced by a remote, online system. We implore DIA to appreciate the value of local community connections, relationships and community development.

Thanks to our friends at Hato Hone St John Nelson and Tasman Bays and an amazing anonymous donor we received a brand-new AED and storage cabinet earlier this year.

Now, as part of SHOCKTOBER, Andrea from Hato Hone St John will be returning to show local people how to use it! Join us at 10am on Friday 23rd of October for a free one-hour free training session that is designed to give you the confidence to take action if someone suffers a cardiac arrest by: 1. Calling 111 2. Starting CPR & 3. Using an AED. Register your place here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/JvyFTQeEcA

AEDs are crucial life saving devices. Early defibrillation from a bystander can more than double a person's chance of survival during cardiac arrest.

Mark your calendars people. Our amazing amigos from Nelsust are putting on another Not Your Normal Candidates Meeting here at VCC at 7pm on Wednesday the 7th of October. They’ll be bringing all 5 Nelson Parliamentary candidates together to answer specific questions on transport and climate change and it is always lots of fun. There will be musical entertainment, previous years they have drenched candidates talking for too long with water pistols… 😉 https://www.facebook.com/events/2109979379594807
