Join us the crew in Rotorua next month for the 2026 NZ Arb Husqvarna National Tree Climbing Championship. We need volunteers of all skill and experience levels for competition and set up days.

Specifically, we're on the hunt for a scorer whiz-kid to help out in the engine room entering our climbers scores into the final scoring database. We'd love to hear from you if you think you can help.

A group of curious scientists set out to research whether trees sleep. They spent several nights tracking changes in a birch tree using infrared laser scanners. They discovered that the birch tree they were studying drooped its branches by an average of 10 centimeters at night. Once daylight hit, they lifted back into place.

Scientists know that trees cycle through different physiological changes depending on certain factors, like water balance and light availability. But why branches relax is still a mystery. Is it to conserve energy overnight? Is it because of too much or too little water? Is it the lack of light? What we do know is that trees may not sleep in the traditional sense, but they do take time to unwind. Considering how hard they work for us and the planet during the day, they’ve certainly earned the rest.

Announcement 🎉 NZ to host ISA Asia-Pacific Tree Climbing Championship 2027

We’re thrilled to announce that the ISA Asia-Pacific Tree Climbing Championship (APTCC) 2027 will be held at the magnificent Cornwall Park in Auckland, from 30 April–2 May 2027.

The championship will bring together some of the Asia-Pacific region’s finest climbing arborists for three days of skill, precision and world-class competition among the trees.

2027 will be the first time ISA APTCC has been held in New Zealand since the 2019 Championship at Christchurch Botanic Gardens—and we can’t wait to welcome it back!

• ISA APTCC 2027 | 30 April–2 May 2027
• Cornwall Park, Auckland

There will be plenty of opportunities for our local arboriculture community to get involved in this epic event. More details are coming soon!
