Uniquely Nelson Be the first to know what's happening in Nelson City! Every day we're posting news and offers. https://linktr.ee/uniquelynelson

Uniquely Nelson’s primary role is to promote the Nelson Central Business District (CBD) to encourage greater visitation, thereby increasing retail spend into the Nelson economy. Whilst retail remains the key focus, Uniquely Nelson also promotes the diversity of City businesses, services, arts & culture and hospitality. Uniquely Nelson has identified there are a number of drivers that bring people

into the City; everything from employment to shopping, dining, being entertained, doing business and using professional and recreational services. Our challenge is to continue to encourage multiple reasons to visit the City, thus increasing the amount of time, and the amount of spend, in the City. On a business to business level, Uniquely Nelson works to develop and maintain close relationships with the significant organisations and key stakeholders influencing the Nelson retail/business environment, and recognizes its role to assist and support these. Uniquely Nelson is the ideal conduit to facilitate communications between the CBD retail/business community and other stakeholders. Uniquely Nelson has developed a range of communications tools including:

• Nelson City Guide – 60,000 copies are printed annually and distributed to Nelson City retailers, cafés, bars and other businesses in the City, at Nelson-Tasman i-sites, Nelson City Council and Nelson Airport. It’s also available at numerous accommodation providers, tourist attractions, i-sites and other public amenities throughout New Zealand.
• Uniquely Nelson website and business directory – www.uniquelynelson.co.nz
• Online Marketing - Uniquely Nelson has a comprehensive online marketing campaign in place including Facebook, Twitter and e-newsletters.

Te Huihuinga-o-Matariki Festival 2026

Nelson City Council is hosting, Te Huihuinga-o-Matariki Festival in collaboration with Ngā Iwi e Waru o Te Tauihu o Te Waka-a-Māui.
We are excited to announce that acclaimed New Zealand artist Kings will headline this year’s celebrations. Kingdon Chapple-Wilson, stage name Kings, is a New Zealand rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer, and one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable music artists. His breakout 2016 hit ‘Don’t Worry Bout it’ holds the record for most consecutive weeks (33) at the top of the New Zealand radio charts.
Kings is used to celebrating Matariki with his whānau. “My studio is based on a marae, so every year we’ve held our own event to celebrate and honour Matariki. We’d have singing competitions that I judged, alongside kai, performances and educational entertainment about the stars. It’s a beautiful kaupapa."
After years of the festival being held at the Trafalgar Centre, this year’s festival will be held at Saxton Stadium.

How a Small Nelson Festival Keeps Punching Above Its Weight — and Why Artists Get In Behind It

While festivals across Aotearoa scale back or disappear, one regional event in Whakatū Nelson is doing the opposite. This July, Bayleys Te Ramaroa - Nelson Light Festival will transform the city into an immersive playground of light, sound, sculpture, and interactive art — bringing internationally recognised artists, large-scale installations, and tens of thousands of visitors into the CBD in the heart of winter.
A community-built event from a regional city, Bayleys Te Ramaroa continues to attract innovative light and interactive artists from across Aotearoa. This year’s festival features a major installation inside Nelson Cathedral by acclaimed light artist Angus Muir of Darklight. Dedicated to renewing spaces while acknowledging their history, Darklight’s installation, Mind in the Ether invites audiences into a meditative journey where light, sound, and space dissolve into a suspended, dreamlike atmosphere.
Since launching in 2013, the festival has grown into one of the country’s largest free light festivals, attracting over 50,000 visitors in 2023. “In a regional city, access to large-scale immersive art experiences is rare,” says Michaela. “For young people, seeing work like this up close can completely change what feels creatively possible. For five winter nights, the city changes. You can feel the atmosphere shift.”
“Te Ramaroa exists because people make it happen,” adds Bayleys Te Ramaroa Trust Chair Annette Milligan. “Thousands of volunteer hours go into this event. It’s artists mentoring younger artists, businesses backing creativity, community groups collaborating together.
That’s why it feels different.” Bayleys Te Ramaroa Nelson Light Festival takes place July 3rd – 7th throughout Whakatū/Nelson.
