Whether you have a day off, or required to work, wishing you all a great first of June, King’s Birthday … and wondering how we are in the sixth month of this year soooo fast!

What happened to time?

Don’t fret about your to do list, well not today … here’s to making the next seven months count.

PS: I admit I have some catching up to do.

What does teamwork mean to you?

Can you list three effective teams you have been a part of?

Do you ever wonder what turns a group into a team?

It’s an oldie and a goodie that “There’s no ‘I’ in team”.

It is amazing when a group of people work together and share the load. As a part of Toastmasters each club has a hard-working executive. These people are regular members, have varying experience inside and outside of Toastmasters, and volunteer their time to assist individuals and the club achieve success. Without them - who would make sure there is a venue for the meeting, memberships are paid, roles are allocated to different members, new members find out how to do different roles other than be a speaker.

Here’s a big shout out to all those who volunteer their time behind the scenes of a Toastmasters meeting.

And an even bigger shout out for volunteers everywhere.

“Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success.”Unknown

Every meeting is different.

Last night we were treated to a first time Table Topics presenter Roshi, who gave us ‘two words’ to speak to. How would you respond to a spontaneous presentation about - school memory, lazy day, hidden talent, and more. Well done to all, and our first time guest Tiana, who turned her ‘hidden talent’ into her fear of public speaking and winning Best Table Topics.

Emma gave us an overview of her ‘balanced’ communication styles and a description of how she demonstrates different styles in different situations in her wine maker role, while also meeting her personal objective of speaking from prompts only, rather than full notes.

Ian reflected on his 35 years in Toastmasters, how Toastmasters has helped him, his recent (very successful) presentation at Pecha Kucha, podcasting and how busy retired life is.

Our grammarian Danielle gave us ‘relevant’ as the word of the meeting and it became relevant in many ways.

Best Evaluator: Ian
Best Speaker: Emma
Best Table Topics (impromptu): Tiana
Best Contribution: Jacqui (for using the analogy of a team sport - soccer, hockey, netball) to describe executive roles in Toastmasters and how, as a team, with all playing their role and supporting others, growth happens).

Our next meeting is Monday 8 June. Guests always welcome.

Reading an article on teamwork and thought about how this applies to Toastmasters … or other areas of our lives.

While this article is titled ‘inclusivity’, I was thinking how we blend the diversity of skills, experience, culture, and not least - individual expectations.

“Inclusivity

There’s been tons of research about how diverse teams perform better. But if you really want to reap the benefits of diversity, as diversity consultant Vernā Myers puts it, it’s not enough to invite people to the party – you need to ask them to dance.

Inclusivity means everybody on your team feels welcomed, supported, and valued regardless of their background, perspectives, and ideas.

This isn’t something that just happens by putting people on the same team. It requires consistent thought and effort – by you and every single team member – to ensure nobody feels forgotten or frozen out. This sense of belonging pays off in the form of better performance and increased retention.”

Monday Motivation.

Sharing from Tony Robbins. “We all get what we tolerate in ourselves - and in other people.”

I’m sure we can all reflect and find a time when this prompt may have been useful.

Sometimes acknowledging ‘it is what it is’ and not being triggered is enough to turn off the voice in our head.

My wise parents used to advise me to stop moaning and do something about ‘it’. Whatever ‘it’ was 😂

My advice to me now is to ask myself whether I have the opportunity to have input, or make a change, and take the appropriate action.

Napier Toastmasters … where you can share your stories, your thoughts on topics of your choice; use your imagination and practice speaking skills, in a supportive, and safe environment.

“No matter how busy you are, take time to make the other person feel important. Everyone has an invisible sign hanging from their neck saying, ‘Make me feel important.’ Never forget this message when working with people." (Paraphrased)

At a Toastmasters meeting

✅ We listen to you

✅ You have opportunities for both prepared presentations as well as impromptu speaking

✅ When you speak, an evaluator will do their best to provide useful feedback acknowledging what you did well and ‘ideas’ for possible ways you could do things in a different way

Is it time to get rid of your um’s, ah’s and other ‘filler’ words?

Napier Toastmasters, where every person is important.

What a great meeting, chaired by Ian, and a big thank you to all who attended and well done to our six guests for all participating and speaking from the front of the room.

There were thought provoking speeches related to Aloneness versus Loneliness, The Importance of Good Communication; a Table Topics with questions all about dogs; the challenge of incorporating the Word of the Day - Resilience; and President Greg gave an overview of club executive roles.

A humorous start to the week with a quote from Winnie the Pooh “People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day”. A A Milne

For most reading this, life is busy. Perhaps your thinking tells you - you don’t have time. Stop. Consider what is important.

Change the ‘impossible’ into … I’m possible.

Have a great week.

Take a moment …
Consider if you were asked to speak for two minutes on the topic of autumn.

What would you say?

Would you describe the beauty of autumn coloured leaves?
Or perhaps how frosty mornings can be followed by a warm sunny day?
Or childhood memories of jumping in piles of leaves?

Nature shows us how to make change in our life and give ourself space to be.
To let go

Toastmasters gives us time to be.
To be creative and to be heard …

Find your voice.

Our next meeting is Monday 11 May and we look forward to meeting you.
