A reminder that binge drinking can have devastating consequences.

A recent article about the tragic death of a Dunedin student has once again highlighted the very real dangers of binge drinking and the importance of taking alcohol-related harm seriously.

Our deepest condolences go to the student’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. No family should have to experience such a heartbreaking loss.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community left to grieve. This is not about judgement; it is about awareness, responsibility and looking after one another. Knowing the signs of alcohol poisoning, staying with someone who is unwell, speaking up when a situation becomes unsafe, and knowing when to call for help can save a life. Health New Zealand advises calling 111 if someone is unconscious or you are concerned they may have alcohol poisoning.

Let’s continue the conversation about safer choices, responsible drinking and creating environments where our young people can have fun without putting their lives at risk.

One decision, one conversation, or simply staying with someone when they need help could make all the difference.

The "senseless" death of the 20-year-old, who choked on his own vomit, has been called a "tragic consequence of excessive alcohol consumption" by a coroner.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the kōrero at our Rise Together - Alcohol Harm Prevention Workshop. It was wonderful to see community members and professionals come together for an open and meaningful conversation about alcohol harm, prevention, early intervention, healthier choices and community safety.

A special thank you to Acting Sergeant Vinod Mehra for sharing his knowledge and making the session engaging and interactive. The vision impairment glasses activity gave us a practical and eye-opening experience of how alcohol can affect our vision, coordination and judgement, helping us better understand the very real dangers of drinking and driving.

We also sincerely thank Sergeant Darren Bryson from Manurewa Road Policing for joining us and sharing valuable insights into the roadside drug testing programme introduced nationwide from 1 July, and what this means for road safety and our communities.

A big thank you to Fiji Girmit Foundation NZ फिजी गिरमिट फौंडेशन न्यू ज़ीलैण्ड for collaborating with us and supporting this important community initiative. A very special mention to Shenila Maharaj for all the hard work behind the scenes in helping make this workshop possible. Your support and commitment to this important mahi is truly appreciated.

Thank you to SEVA Charitable Trust New Zealand for generously providing the venue and supporting this important mahi in our community.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts, asked questions and contributed to the kōrero. Your openness and participation made the afternoon informative, engaging and meaningful.

We believe that creating safe spaces for kōrero, connection and learning is an important part of prevention and building stronger, healthier communities.

Vinaka vakalevu and thank you once again to everyone who made Rise Together a success!

Zero alcohol drinks are becoming increasingly popular but what do young people really think about them? This RNZ article explores changing attitudes toward drinking and whether alcohol free options can support healthier choices. An interesting read for individuals, families, and communities.
What do you think about zero-alcohol drinks are they a helpful alternative for people, or could they still encourage a drinking culture? Share your thoughts below.

Over the past decade, zero-alcohol drinks have gone from a relatively niche product to a staple of our supermarket aisles, bottle stores and pubs.

Today, we gathered for a meaningful kōrero on Su***de Prevention Day. We reflected on the mahi we do, shared our understanding of the different supports available, and explored how we can continue to work together with care, compassion and understanding to support individuals and whānau in our communities.

A reminder that sometimes, simply listening, connecting, reaching out, and letting someone know they are not alone can make a meaningful difference.

Let’s keep the conversation going, continue to look out for one another, and create spaces where people feel safe to reach out for support.

Meaningful korero with Mr. Venkatraman, Editor at Indian Newslink on matters concerning our communities.

The interaction offered a valuable opportunity to look at community matters through different lenses and reflect on how local voices and experiences can receive greater attention.

The exchange reinforced the importance of staying connected to what is happening on the ground and ensuring community perspectives remain part of the wider conversation.

It was a privilege to welcome Superintendent Riki Whiu, Director Partnerships, Tāmaki Makaurau, to Gandhi Nivas Papakura in his new role.

Joining him were Inspector Andrew Lui, Ethnic Responsiveness Manager, and Senior Sergeant Sharon Price, District Family Violence Coordinator, Whāngaia Ngā Pā Harakeke.

We were deeply touched by Superintendent Riki Whiu's passion, vision, and big heart. His genuine commitment to strengthening partnerships and supporting whānau was both inspiring and encouraging. Conversations like these remind us that meaningful change happens when leaders and communities come together with a shared purpose.

Thank you for taking the time to visit Gandhi Nivas. We look forward to working together to strengthen families, prevent family harm, and build safer, more connected communities. We wish you well in your new role ❤️
