Le Va was proud to be part of a Samoan Language Week celebration that brought together over 100 students from Manurewa High School and Papatoetoe High School.

Coordinated by our Community Mobiliser .morisa , the day focused on strengthening cultural identity, language, and connection.

Le Va shared the importance of being proud of your culture, language, traditions, and values, and how cultural identity is closely linked to our wellbeing. When our young people know who they are and where they come from, they are better equipped to thrive.

Faโ€™afetai Timo for your leadership and commitment to creating spaces where our tupulaga Samoa can connect, learn, and grow.

๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡ธ Our language is our identity. Our culture is our strength.

"As Pacific people, we do not study alone, so being part of Le Va was about doing things as a collective and also celebrating success."

When Dr Jack Scanlan walked across the stage at Massey University in May 2026 to graduate as Aotearoa New Zealandโ€™s first Pacific Doctor of Social Work, he carried with him the hopes and dreams of his Samoan mother, ฤiga and ancestors.

A New Zealand-born Samoan, proudly hailing from Mฤngere, South Auckland, and the villages of Faleula and Vaiusu/Vaigaga in Samoa, Dr Scanlan made the valedictory address on behalf of the other students graduating that day.

โ€œItโ€™s a real honour to be named valedictorian. I want to thank our family and friends โ€“ those who have passed on and everyone in our lives who has supported our journey. Today is the day we get to carry you all across the stage with us,โ€ he said.

Alongside completing his doctorate, Dr Scanlan also works as a social work lecturer for Massey University and is a former recipient of Le Vaโ€™s Futures that Work Pacific Mental Health and Addiction Scholarship.

This yearโ€™s theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa โ€“ Samoan Language Week 2026 is: โ€œโ€™E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nuโ€™uโ€ which means โ€œFrom the high mountains are the blessings of the village.โ€
ย
This theme can be understood in several ways:
โ›ฐ๏ธ The mountains as providers - source of natural resources such as food and water that sustain and nourish the village.
๐ŸŒบ The mountains as our ancestors and elders - representing the knowledge and traditions passed down through generations
๐Ÿ™ The mountains as God - a reminder of the spiritual guidance, blessings and protection that support us in everyday life.
ย
This week, we celebrate the richness of the Samoan language and culture. Manuia le Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa! ๐Ÿ‡ผ๐Ÿ‡ธโค๏ธ
