Te Kāhui Tūhono Celebrates 50 Years of Orongomai Marae

Te Kāhui Tūhono had the wonderful opportunity to celebrate with Orongomai Marae as they marked the incredible milestone of 50 years.

It was an action-packed day filled with hākina, korikori tinana, kai, and a quiz taking us back to yesteryear. There was plenty of laughter, reminiscing and, most importantly, the opportunity to reconnect with other kaumātua from across the Hutt Valley region.

The highlight of the day was the whanaungatanga — coming together, sharing kōrero and celebrating the strength and history of our people.

A huge ngā mihi nui to Orongomai Marae for the wonderful manaakitanga shown to us all. Your warmth, generosity and hospitality made the day truly special.

🐟 Yummy yummy! Fresh Kaimoana for our whānau! 🐟

We’re excited to be part of The Kai Ika Project kaupapa, helping get fresh kaimoana into the hands of whānau across our community. 🌊💙

Bring your own pot, bucket or chilly bin and take some fresh kai home for you and yours. 🐟

There are also other regular Kai Ika distributions happening across the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wellington.

If you’re Māori and eligible to enrol, today is also the last day to choose to be on the Māori Roll before the election.

Need support with your pūtea? Our Kaiārahi Pūtea are available to kōrero with whānau about budgeting, managing bills, reducing debt, planning ahead, and building confidence with money. Whether it’s a small question or a bigger challenge, we’re here to walk alongside you.

A space for our kaumātua to connect, share kōrero, enjoy activities, and strengthen whanaungatanga through regular gatherings and shared experiences.

🥕 Kai To The Community | Community Kai Support
Continuing to support whānau through access to kai and opportunities to connect, share, and uplift one another within our community.

📅 These kaupapa are available every week across our different locations. Please note that sessions may be affected by public holidays, staff training, or other community commitments. Any changes will be shared on our page.

Your kindness and commitment to supporting your local community will make a real difference to the whānau accessing our 𝗞𝗮𝗶 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 initiative. At a time when many households are facing increasing pressures, acts of generosity such as yours help ensure that whānau have access to essential kai and pantry items when they need them most.

We are continually inspired by rangatahi who choose to turn compassion into action and demonstrate what community care looks like in practice.

Ngā mihi also to Caro and the team who helped facilitate this connection and ensure your contribution reached the whānau who need it.

Change of venue for kai to the community today — we’ll be at **St Matthew’s Taitā, 53 Reynolds Street**, as there are awards taking place at the Walter Nash Centre today.

Please feel free to come along. We’ll also have soups provided by **Saint Vincent de Paul**. 🍲

Over the past few months, Te Kāhui Tuhono has continued to grow through our weekly gatherings, shared experiences, and support for one another. Our rōpū has remained active, connected, and committed to whakawhanaungatanga.

We have enjoyed a couple of outings together, including commemorating ANZAC Day and attending the movie about Sargent Haane Manahi of the 28th Maori Battalion. Creating time to connect and enjoy each other’s company. We have also welcomed organisations into our space to share information about the services and support available for our members and hapori.

Through laughter, life, loss, listening, learning, and leaning on one another, our rōpū continues to grow stronger together.

Just a quick update to let you know we’re still on for Kai to the Community today at the St. St Matthew’s Taitā

We know the weather across the Wellington Region is pretty rough at the moment – cold, wet, and windy 🌧️💨 – so please take care if you’re heading out. If you do come down, make sure to wrap up warm.

We’ll have fruit, veges, and a few extra bits available for those who need it. As always, please remember it’s 1 bag per household so we can make sure everyone gets a share.

We’re here from 2pm until the kai is gone – would be lovely to see you all.

Due to current weather warnings and the State of Emergency, our office will be closed on Tuesday. Our kaimahi will be working remotely and still available to support where needed.

Please take care and follow safety advice - keep travel to essential trips only, secure your homes, and check in on our kaumātua and vulnerable whānau.
