Hato Hone St John Caring Caller is a free service providing regular friendly phone calls to people who may live alone or feel a little isolated.

It’s not a medical service.

It’s a chance for a kōrero. A familiar voice. Someone asking how your day is going and genuinely wanting to hear the answer.

And sometimes that little bit of connection can mean an awful lot.
If there’s someone in your whānau or community who might enjoy having a regular friendly call, it could be worth letting them know Caring Caller exists.

One of the goals of Shocktober is to help more of us feel confident about what to do if someone experiences a cardiac arrest.

Hato Hone St John teaches 3 Steps for Life:

❤️ Start CPR
⚡ Use an AED
You don’t need to remember everything perfectly before you can start learning.

And if AEDs make you nervous, remember that they are designed to guide you through what to do.
This October, Hato Hone St John aims to reach more than 17,000 people through CPR and AED education, First Aid Training, St John in Schools and community events.

⚡ Shocktober starts today!

Throughout October, you might notice a few more hearts, lightning bolts and conversations about CPR popping up around Hato Hone St John.
That’s because it’s Shocktober, a month all about helping more people feel confident about CPR and using an AED.

And this year there’s a beautifully simple message behind it.
Learn CPR for your loved ones. ❤️
Because chances are, if you ever need to use CPR, it could be for somebody you know and care about.

Throughout Shocktober we’ll be sharing useful information to help our Horowhenua community become a little more familiar with CPR and AEDs.

Nothing scary. Nothing complicated.

Just practical information that could help you feel more confident if you ever need it. 💛

It’s a question we often ask each other, but how often do we stop and check in with ourselves?

For Mental Health Awareness Week, Hato Hone St John is hosting a free 30 minute webinar to help us better understand mental health and wellbeing.

Together, we’ll explore what mental health means, how to recognise when we or someone around us might be struggling, and simple ways to support ourselves and each other.

There’ll also be a chance to learn about the mental health and wellbeing courses Hato Hone St John offers.

The second hand shopping FOMO is REAL.

You just never know what’s going to turn up on the racks at our Levin St John Retail Store. And if you don’t pop in today, what if the perfect find is gone tomorrow?! 😂💛

But in all seriousness, we’re so grateful to everyone who donates their pre loved treasures to our store. Every donation gives something another chance to be loved and helps support the mahi of Hato Hone St John.

As always a thank you to our wonderful Retail Store team, who spend so much time sorting donations, getting everything ready for the shop floor and making the store such a lovely place to visit. We couldn’t do it without you. 💚

A pretty special group of people. 💛

A couple of weeks ago, we came together at the Levin Fire Station to recognise some incredible people and the years they have given to Hato Hone St John and our community.

Across this group are people from our St John Retail Store, Waka Ora Health Shuttle, Caring Caller and Ambulance Operations.

And there were some pretty impressive milestones to celebrate, from 5 years of service right through to 20 years. 💚

A huge congratulations to Marian, Tim, Bobbie, Marjorie, Lisa, Jamiee, Jacob, Shirley, Kimberley and Pamela.

These milestones represent so much more than a number of years.

They represent time given, people supported, friendships made and an incredible commitment to Hato Hone St John and the communities we serve.

Every person celebrated has contributed in their own way, and we are incredibly grateful for the mahi, care and commitment they continue to give.

Congratulations to you all, and thank you. 💛

Sometimes a little support can make a big difference to staying independent. 💛

For many people in our community, being able to stay safely in their own home, keep their usual routines and stay connected matters enormously.

Hato Hone St John has several services designed to help make that possible.

🏠 Medical Alarms can provide reassurance and a way to call for help when it’s needed.

☎️ Caring Caller provides regular friendly phone calls, offering connection and a check in for people who may be living alone or feeling isolated.

🚐 And here in Horowhenua and Ōtaki, our Waka Ora Health Shuttle helps people get to medical appointments when transport might otherwise be a barrier.

They’re different services, but they share something important. Helping people feel supported, connected and able to maintain their independence for longer. 💚

Sometimes knowing these services exist is the first step. And even if you don’t need them yourself, someone in your whānau, neighbourhood or wider community might.
