What an evening at LT McGuinness Ltd last week! There was something a bit different about a Business After Five held inside a working logistics hub - no function room, no lectern, just a big industrial space, good company, and a business that clearly has a lot to show for itself.
Sean McGuinness set the tone early. He spoke about LT McGuinness the way someone does when they're genuinely proud of where something came from — a joinery shop started back in 1948, now a 450-strong company with landmark projects across the country.
David Aldred followed with something that surprised a few people in the room — just how much of LT McGuinness's operation is centred right here in Horowhenua, and how that came about. He was candid about the journey of establishing a presence in the region, and he mentioned that the large site next door, 2,000m² of commercial land, is available and looking for the right tenant. Worth knowing if you're in the market.
Rob Dickinson and Eddie Louth gave a thorough rundown of the LTM Plant and logistics side: cranes, elevated work platforms, a massive storage facility with MPI Transitioning Facility approval, and a fleet that services sites from Wellington to Hawke's Bay. It was fascinating to hear about how it all works.
James McLean's segment was probably the moment the room went a bit quiet. He talked about the Scott Base Redevelopment in Antarctica, New Zealand's permanent research station on the ice, and LT McGuinness's role in the design & delivery of the project. What really blew people away was learning that part of the preparation work is happening right here in Levin: specialist testing of products and materials to make sure they can withstand the extreme cold of the Antarctic environment before anything gets shipped south for construction to begin. It's rigorous and logistically complex work; the fact that Levin is where some of it is being done speaks volumes about the capability sitting in this region that most of us walk around without knowing.
Travis Blizzard closed out with NZL Supply Co. and a live demonstration of their new rollforming machine (a digitally integrated steel framing system). It was a great way to end the night — something tangible to actually watch and react to, not just hear about.
LT McGuinness were generous hosts. The space was buzzing, the conversation carried on well past the formal part of the evening, and it was a good reminder of why these events matter — not just for the networking, but for sharing real insights into the amazing things happening in our Horowhenua business community. A big thank you to the whole LT McGuinness team for having us.
Looking forward to our next event, business networking at our THCL office at 8 Bath Street, Levin. Tickets are limited, book yours here: https://events.humanitix.com/business-networking-event-june-2026
