For the month of September, we are proud to shine the spotlight on Tai Tokerau Honey Ltd

Tai Tokerau Honey is a long-standing, 100% Māori-owned business in Kaitaia. With beehives based around the North Island as well as onsite extraction and packaging facilities, Rob and Lohnet Murray have been producing pure Northland honey and high-grade Mānuka honey since 2009.

Tai Tokerau Honey was founded through hard work and a desire to carve a path for Māori businesses to thrive in international trade. Tai Tokerau Honey began to export New Zealand Mānuka honey to various countries in 2015. In a post-covid economy, they continue to persist and seek out new markets as the trade opportunities have revived over the years.

“It hasn’t always been easy in the honey industry over the past 17 years. There’s been ups, downs, and many in-betweens. But that’s business and we love a challenge!” Says Lonnie.

The family-run business plans their year around beehives and horse trekking, with Lohnet also operating Ahipara Horse Treks. When they’re not at the workshop or in the honey shop on Milky Way (opposite Bells Produce), you’ll likely find them riding their steads of choice; Rob on his Harley and Lonnie on her horses. Ultimately, they’re part of our Kaitaia community.

Last night we came together for our 2026 KBA AGM. We would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who joined us. It was fantastic to see so many familiar faces, alongside some new ones, coming together to connect, share ideas and hear more about what’s happening in our local business community.

A special mihi to our guest speakers, Abbey Duncan-Hughes from TopGate Marketing and the team from Northland Regional Council, for sharing their time, knowledge and insights with us. We also had Senior Sergeant Richard Garton join us with a quick update on the CCTV gap analysis project currently underway.

Congratulations also to our newly re-elected KBA Committee. We’re lucky to have the same dedicated crew continuing around the table for another year, bringing their time, ideas and passion for our community.

And a very special acknowledgement to Josh Kirby, who is stepping down as Chair after three years in the role. Josh’s contribution to KBA and the wider business community over that time has been profound, and we’re incredibly grateful for the leadership, energy and commitment he has given. While he may be handing over the Chair role, we’re very pleased he’ll still be around the table as a committee member and continuing to contribute to the mahi.

A big thank you to our caterers, Peekaboo Backyard Eatery, for the delicious kai and for always being so supportive and accommodating.

Most of all, thank you to our members, local businesses and wider community who continue to support the KBA and the work we do. There’s a lot happening in Kaitaia, and we’re proud to play our part in supporting, connecting and advocating for our local businesses.

We’re looking forward to another positive year ahead for KBA and our town.

Abbey is the founder of Northland-based agency TopGate Marketing, supporting businesses with marketing strategy, branding, websites and digital campaigns.

In a short, practical presentation, Abbey will share why digital marketing matters for small and medium-sized businesses and how it can help you reach the right customers, strengthen your visibility and support business growth.

🌧️ Northland Regional Council | Local Flood Protection Update

NRC will also provide a brief update on the proposed flood protection works around Milky Way and Bell’s Produce - an important topic for our town centre and local businesses.

The update will cover the options currently being considered, funding and decision-making processes, enabling works underway, and what the likely next steps will be.

The AGM is also a chance to hear what KBA has been working on, what’s ahead for the coming year, and how we’re continuing to support and advocate for Kaitaia’s business community.
