It’s Volunteer Week 🤩

Since moving to Kaitaia in 2019, Estelle Thompson has made an extraordinary and far-reaching impact on netball in the Far North through her commitment to Mangonui Netball Centre and Far North Phoenix Netball Club. Despite having no local connections when she arrived, Estelle quickly immersed herself in volunteer service, playing a key role in implementing and leading the Future Ferns Player Development Programme (PDP). Her leadership helped transform the Centre’s approach to player development, expanding opportunities from a small representative group to around 40 Year 7 and 8 players each year, ensuring more young people can access quality coaching and meaningful pathways in the sport.

Estelle’s dedication extends well beyond programme delivery. She continues to lead and coordinate PDP, coach multiple teams, support coach development, serve on committees, umpire, and take on numerous operational roles—all while often sacrificing time with her own whānau. Her selfless contribution is evident in everything she does, from arriving early to prepare facilities to mentoring coaches and representing the Centre at a regional level. Estelle exemplifies true service, leadership, and passion, consistently putting others first and creating lasting opportunities for players, coaches, and officials. Her significant and enduring impact makes her an exceptionally deserving recipient of this award.

It’s Volunteer Week 🤩

You’ve seen these two in control weekly, monthly, YEARLY!

Showing up year after year, they’ve done over 20 years of service for our centre!

Proud of our mates and stoked that we can recognise their mahi 🤍

Sharlah and Whio Motu have made an extraordinary contribution to netball and their community through more than 20 years of dedicated volunteer service with the Mangonui Netball Centre. Sharlah’s impact spans over two decades of coaching, including more than 10 years with Rarawa Netball and nearly 20 years in the representative coaching space. She continues to give back selflessly, currently supporting a Year 1–2 team despite not having children involved, and regularly umpiring games without payment—simply for the love of the sport and her commitment to her players. Together, Sharlah and Whio have also managed the centre’s control room for over 15 years, working seamlessly as a team and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to keeping the game running smoothly.

Whio has stood alongside Sharlah every step of the way, contributing countless hours to events, fundraisers, and game day operations, where he is known as the centre’s most reliable timekeeper. His service to the community extends beyond sport as a member of the Ahipara Volunteer Fire Brigade, reflecting his deep commitment to helping others. Together, Sharlah and Whio embody the true spirit of volunteering—giving their time, energy, skills, and aroha without expectation. Their outstanding contribution has already been recognised with Life Membership, and their lasting impact continues to strengthen both netball and the wider community.

MAY VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH - TANIA PARKER 🥳

We’re super stoked that this months Volunteer of the Month is Tania Parker! You would have seen her around the courts helping develop and grow our umpires!

Nomination:
Tania is incredibly passionate about upskilling and developing umpires within our netball community. Although she is not currently on the committee, she works closely with the Umpire Coordinator to support umpire coaching, assist with tough games, and contribute to the development of a long-term plan for umpiring at our centre.

What makes Tania’s contribution so special is that she does not do this for a particular club or team; she shows up for the wider netball community. She is always willing to help new and learner umpires, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical support whenever it is needed.

Tania’s knowledge, commitment, and willingness to give her time make a real difference to the confidence and growth of our umpires. She is a true example of someone who gives back quietly and consistently, and we are very grateful for everything she does for netball.

CONTROL vs REPLAY – Made Simple!
This is one of the most common rules that can be confusing for players (and parents too!) — so here’s an easy way to understand it 👇
👉 You can fumble to get the ball
👉 But once you control it – that’s your turn
✔️ Play on if you’re still trying to gain control
❌ Turnover if you have control and go again
It’s all about the difference between uncontrolled touches (allowed) and clear possession (once only) 🙌
