🌸 A Blooming Good Time: 🌼 Discover Kaitaia’s Floral Art Club 🌺
Tucked away in a warm room at the Cornerstone Church on Matthews Ave, A delightful tradition has been quietly blossoming in Kaitaia for the past 32 years — the Kaitaia Floral Art Club.
Meeting on the fourth Monday of each month from 10am to 1pm, the club offers more than just a space to create beautiful floral displays — it’s a place of friendship, laughter, and a shared love of nature’s gifts.
Longtime members Loma and Pat have been part of the club for an incredible 30 years, making them the longest-current members. Loma says it’s the simple joy of flowers and good company that keeps her coming back. She often brings beautiful cuttings and blooms from her own lovingly-tended garden to use in her creations. Meanwhile, Club President Lyn reminded us you don’t need to have your own garden — sometimes a kind neighbour and a brave ask are all it takes to gather the goods for a creation!
Another cherished member, Gloria, joined the Kaitaia club nine years ago after moving home to the Far North, but her love for floral art began much earlier — as a member of the Helensville club, she brought her creative flair and experience with her. “It’s a bit sad the numbers have dwindled in recent years,” she shares, “because we really do love coming together each month — it’s such a lovely group, and there's always room for more.”
Each meeting includes a design challenge for those wanting to test their creative limits, or you can simply go with an “open choice” piece and let inspiration strike. There’s a bit of friendly competition too — members submit their arrangements into various categories including “Miniature” or “Open Petite” which pose their own challenges. Every piece is admired and judged by fellow attendees, earning points that accumulate throughout the year. Come year’s end, awards are presented and celebrated over a cheerful gathering.
Membership is just $20 per year, and alongside the floral fun is a shared morning tea, good conversation, and plenty of laughter. A monthly trading table also pops up with plants, produce, and cuttings, reflecting the generous and community-minded spirit of the group. From north to south, members travel in to Kaitaia take part — and while their numbers may be small, their hearts and hopes for the future of the club are big. No prior skills are needed — just a love for flowers, creativity, and connecting with others.
The club has also enjoyed occasional guest speakers and demonstrations, making it a great way to learn something new and explore floral art in a relaxed, encouraging environment.
Whether you’re a keen gardener, a budding creative, or just looking for a welcoming group to share a cuppa with — the Kaitaia Floral Art Club could be just the spot for you. Pop in, have a look, and say hello! You might just find yourself blooming in more ways than one.
