Youth Merit Awards 2026 👏

Last night was a beautiful event where we celebrated some truly inspiring young people at our Youth Merit Awards.

These students were recognised for demonstrating the Rotary Four-Way Test in their schools and wider communities — showing integrity, respect, kindness and a commitment to making a positive difference.

It was wonderful to celebrate not only their achievements, but the values they demonstrate every day. Congratulations to all the recipients, and thank you to the schools, families and teachers who support and encourage these young leaders.

Service above self starts with the next generation.

Last night, we had the pleasure of welcoming two special guests from the Rotary Club of Kenmore in Queensland, Australia, to our Rotary Club of Invercargill North meeting.

It was wonderful to hear about the projects their club is involved in and to share ideas and fellowship across the Tasman. Rotary connections like these remind us that, no matter where we are in the world, we are united by a shared commitment to Service Above Self.

Fifty years of service is more than a milestone—it's a lifetime of making a difference.

Last week, the Rotary Club of Invercargill North had the privilege of recognising Bryon King for an extraordinary 50 years of dedicated Rotary service.

Bryon's commitment to Service Above Self has touched countless lives and strengthened our community in ways that often go unseen. Rotary isn't just about meetings—it's about people who quietly give their time, skills, and hearts to help others, year after year.

Because of members like Bryon, Rotary continues to support local projects, develop future leaders, respond to community needs, and create lasting change both here at home and around the world.

Thank you, Bryon, for your unwavering dedication, generosity, and the example you set for all of us. Your 50 years of service remind us that one person's commitment can make an incredible difference.

The Rotary Club of Invercargill North celebrated its annual Changeover last night, marking the beginning of a new Rotary year.

We extend our sincere thanks to our outgoing President Sandhiya Gilmete and the board for their dedication, leadership, and service over the past year. Through the commitment of our members and volunteers, our club has continued to support our community and uphold the Rotary spirit of Service Above Self.

It was a privilege to officially hand over the chain of office to Eric Roy, who now takes on the role of President of the Rotary Club of Invercargill North. We look forward to supporting Eric and the new Board as they lead the club through another year of service, fellowship, and community impact.

Congratulations, Eric, and best wishes for a successful and rewarding year ahead.

Nine clubs. One scooter challenge. $15,000 for the Grace Street Project.

For the first time ever, nine Southland Rotary clubs joined forces to fundraise for The Grace Street Project by supporting the famous PlaceMakers Southern Scooter Challenge.

On Friday we sat down with them to receive the $15,000 they'd raised for us, and to hear that they're also offering to bring their Youth Development programme here to Southland once our doors are open.

Behind that $15,000 sits a lot of work:

Raffle prizes gathered, raffle sales, auction prizes, Te Anau after party organisation and auction, en route marshalling, scooter rescue … A lot of hours, a lot of hands, a lot of jobs ticked off by people who simply got on with it.

To every member of all nine clubs, thank you. In no particular order:

Rotary Club of Fiordland, Rotary Invercargill South, Rotary Club of Invercargill, Rotary Club of Invercargill Sunrise, Gore Rotary Club, NZ, Winton Rotary, Invercargill North Rotary Club, Rotary EAST Invercargill and The Rotary Club of Aparima, all proudly part of Rotary District 9999

And to everyone who donated a prize or bought a ticket, you've put another block in place.

It takes a village. We've never felt that more than we do right now.
