⚖️ Seminar: Planning for Adulthood — The Legal Framework Around Disability and Disability Rights

Disability Connect are running a seminar on the legal side of planning ahead for your disabled young person, presented by Nan Jensen (Barrister and Solicitor, Quinlaw).

This seminar may be helpful if you:
✅ Want to understand welfare guardianship, power of attorney, property management, and how a Trust may help manage property
✅ Need to know how a Will and Letter of Wishes could be useful
✅ Are thinking about managing and protecting assets or income for your young disabled person
✅ Want to know how to manage assets through a family trust

Research opportunity: disabled parents' experiences of postnatal care

Are you disabled and have had a pēpi | baby in the last two years? Did you receive postnatal care from a Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) midwife?

Researchers want to hear from you.

Birthing Whānau: Experiences and Expectations of Postnatal LMC Midwifery Care in Aotearoa is a study by Ara Institute of Canterbury, Otago Polytechnic, the University of Waikato, the New Zealand College of Midwives, and a team of independent lived experience researchers and midwives. It's one of the first studies in Aotearoa's perinatal sector to intentionally seek out the experiences of disabled whānau, with accessibility and participant choice built in from the start.

You may be eligible if you:
• Identify as disabled, tangata whaikaha, Deaf, neurodivergent, chronically ill, or have another access need
• Had a baby within the last two years
• Received postnatal care from an LMC midwife in Aotearoa

Ways to take part:
Online, in-person, or wānanga-based interviews; written responses; voice messages; asynchronous participation; NZSL interpreters and other supports available on request.

Today is World Senior Citizens Day, a day that recognises and appreciates senior citizens for all their accomplishments and contributions to the community we live in today. Senior citizens are valued members of society, who have plenty of kind wisdom and experience to share with the younger generation.

They are often overlooked and undermined because of their fragile state, but they have played a huge role in history, either in our communities, the workforce, or in our daily households. World Senior Citizens Day is a great opportunity to show them love and plenty of kindness in celebrating their golden age and their presence in our lives.

Come along, try something new and have a go at wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Whether you’ve tried wheelchair sports before or this is your first time, everyone is welcome!
