Zonta International welcomes the United Nations’ designation of 27 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.

This historic decision is an important step in keeping the rights of girls on the global agenda. Through our continued support of the Global Programme to End Child Marriage, a Zonta International signature international service project, we are committed to helping create lasting change so girls can enjoy their childhoods and choose their own futures.

On 27 November and every day, we will continue working toward a world where no girl is a child bride.

On 19 September 1893, Aotearoa New Zealand became the first self-governing nation in the world where women won the right to vote.

It was a decision that changed the course of our history led by wāhine like Kate Sheppard who refused to accept that leadership belonged to some and not others.

More than a century on, Suffrage Day invites a question worth sitting with: we secured the right to vote how are we doing on the power to lead?

The gap between representation and leadership is still real, and this is where Corporate Aotearoa holds genuine influence. Equal pay. Women in senior and governance roles. Inclusive cultures where talent rises regardless of gender. Frameworks like the Women's Empowerment Principles turn that intent into measurable progress.

The suffragists handed us a foundation. What we build on it is up to us.
