Anyone interested in visiting a Rotary Club are most welcome, especially potential members and visting Rotarians. Changeovers in Rotary Clubs are always a very special occasion, celebrated with great aplomb paving the way for the new President and the elected working committee for the year. The Rotary Club of Somerville Inc recently hosted a grand changeover with friends, families and Rotarians as past presidents Vinod Sareen and Benifer Homavazir welcomed Krishna Sharma with the Rotary bling as the President of the club. Also in attendance were the Rotary glitterati, including immediate Past District Governor Kirsten Hawke who represented District Governor Joyti Singh, DG Elect and District New Club Development Chair and President of Rotary Club Botany Downs Raj Chand , District Rotary Foundation Chair Kathryn, District Rotary Peace Fellowships Subcommittee Chair Andrew Harvey , District Annual Fund Subcomittee Chair Allan McKay,
Past District Executive Secretary and current District Rotary Public Image Chair Chand, President of Pakuranga Rotary Club Sandhya Govind , Immediate Past President Rotary Club of Pakuranga, Gerald Patterson and Geoff Thompson from Rotary Club of Howick and Alex Garden from Rotary Club of Pohutukawa.
All in all an evening that set the tone for an exciting Rotary year ahead!

Yohoooo!! Huge Congratulations to our Rotary club of Somerville and the leadership of President Vinod Sareen and Bini Homavazir as well as our club members on receiving the Grattan O’Connell Trophy for ‘ The Club with Highest per Capita Support for the Polio Plus Fund of Rotary Foundation ‘ today from the District Governor Kirsten Hawke . This morning, we woke up to some heartbreaking news. We lost a very dear Rotary Stalwart, a true gem, a Past District Governor, amongst many other things, who lived the values of a true Rotarian. Philly Karani was responsible for a lot of us joining Rotary; he always led by example. His passion for Rotary International was infectious, as were his witty repartees and anecdotes that always added a smile to our meetings. A former surgeon with Ruby Hall Clinic, Dr Philly Karani was a legend who transformed lives, and a proud recipient of Rotary's Service Above Self Award. He will be dearly missed. Deepest condolences to his devoted wife, Yasmin; his son, Darius Karani; daughter-in-law, Homai Karani; his daughter, Ana and son-in-law, Safaraz Shaikh; Philly's sister, Zareen Karani Araoz; and all his doting grandchildren, Fiona, Ryna, Saniya and Zayan. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning, 9am at Ann's Funeral Home. May his journey onward be filled with the love and light.

Turning your deepest pain and grief into a purpose is one of life's toughest challenge.
Nivedita Sharma Vij embarked on the difficult journey after she lost her darling daughter to the rare blood condition of Thalessemia. She attributes part of the loss due to lack of awareness and the New Zealand medical system not equipped to deal with it at the time. Which is why she established the Muskan Care Trust named after her daughter, Muskan to continue the awareness campaign that her daughter had initially kicked off.
At our Rotary meeting Nivedita presented the work that Muskaan Care Trust- TASCA NZ (Thalassaemia & Sickle Cell Aotearoa NZ), does, advocating for optimal care and creating awareness about the invisible disability. She has been working relentlessly, educating communities, health professionals and building peer support, just so that those suffering from the rare blood disorder don't have to go through the huge loss she and her husband did.
