Big thanks to granddaughters who went above and beyond granddaughterly duties, by helping me collect worms for wildfoods. Not quite so grateful to the one who put this weta in with the worms, causing me to squeal more than once until I realised I needed to remove it completely!

An amazing array of fabulous West Coast RDA horses and ponies at the Kokatahi-Kowhitirangi Pony Club Mini Show last weekend. From our smallest pony, Sandy, who is worth his weight in gold, with his devoted rider, Luella all the way up to Toby with Lissy who has worked hard to really improve his abilities. Then mother and daughter team, Lexi and Lucy, who both behaved their best ever for the day with Cooper and Ciara. Harley with Mikayla deservedly won their first ever wide ribbon (only given for champions and reserve champions), and our brand new Sterling shone at his first outing with Anne who has worked so hard with him over the summer break.
Really, we couldn't have asked for better behaviour from any of them (well, maybe with one small quick exception). And the competence from all their riders was a pleasure to see!

Well, that was a BIG load of hay - thanks to Hayden Hahn, Coastwide Forage Solutions Ltd.
But thanks to an amazing group of helpers the RDA hay all got put away in the barn and the rest into about 16 trailers/floats for people to take home for their own horses. Special thanks to Kiwis Rugby club - Kyle Parker, Matthew Olson and others - who aren't even horsey!
Add your name in the comments to ensure you don't miss out on a fun opportunity when the next load arrives!

West Coast RDA was well represented at a recent Dressage and Show-jumping day held recently in greymouth!
Around 35% of competitors had started riding as RDA riders, lesson riders or have helped as volunteers.

Not only that but there were 4 RDA horses competing. Usually having paddock mates nearby can cause problems, but the horses were more relaxed in their own spaces than they have been in the past. Of course the riders have a few shows under their belts now and are aware of the importance of having plenty of time to warm up, and ensuring that their horse is focussed on the rider, not on everything else that is happening around them.

It was also pretty special to see three generations of horses bred by local Welsh Cob breeder, Alice Phillips. Westie Welsh Cobs Lexi (westie beach babe) her daughter Lucy (westie party girl) (both seasoned RDA mounts), and Lion (Lucy’s son). Other RDA horses competing were Toby and London.
All the horses and riders went extremely well, finishing with smiles all around, a few ribbons and the satisfaction of having ridden well, and shown their horses off admirably.

Some of our riders have had to work with overcoming anxiety, lack of confidence, learning dressage tests, remembering all the rules, planning ahead to be ready at the right time, coping with “messing up”, things not going as planned, lots of new people and faces, noise, and the list goes on. RDA has set them up so well for all these challenges!
We are rapt with the efforts of Caleb & London, Lissy & Toby, Ruby & Ashwyn, Cooper & Lexi, Ciara & Lucy and all the helpers! 🏆🏅

Very sad news - two little penguins killed on the road north of Greymouth around 13 mile/Motukiekie Friday night.
Penguins will probably be on or preparing to lay eggs about now.
This is a message to anyone driving on the coast road there and in fact any coast roads after dark - please drive a little slower and leave more space between you and the vehicle in front to give yourself time to avoid any penguins safely.
It's always hard to share this kind of sad image, it might make us feel helpless, but there is something you can do. And please encourage others to do the same.
Thank you.
