Mā Tērā Ka Aha- What would you say?

Su***de has been a dark cloud over Te Tai o Poutini for far too long.

We want to help create safe spaces for kōrero and encourage our community to start conversations with the people they love about what’s really on their minds. The belief that silence means everything is okay is an assumption we need to collectively challenge.

Back in March, we brought together whānau from across Te Tai o Poutini who have been impacted by su***de and invited them to share their experiences with our wider community. Our hope is to shine a light on how one conversation can become a beacon of hope for someone else.

Sometimes it’s not about knowing what to say, it’s about not waiting to say something.

So, what would you say?

💚 Te Tai o Poutini Represent💚

Back in March, we had three of our Poutini Waiora kaimahi take to the stage at the National Māori AOD hui. They spoke about the beauty, and complexities of mahi on the West Coast.

Their kōrero called “The Whakapapa of Poutini Waiora, Healing through Connection”, took whānau on a journey from the beginning of Poutini Waiora, and its original birth as Rata Te Awhina Trust founded by June Robinson. Some earlier memories shared included the likes of the prestigious, ‘Te Waka Hauora’. The waka was unique for its time, travelling up and down Tai Poutini delivering not only wellness checks, but eyebrow waxing- a true testament of responding to community needs!

Our kaimahi additionally spoke about their own journeys, and how they turned their own personal experiences, into passion and drive to create change within their community.

As we reflected on those who paved the way, we think about legacies and what we do to sustain them. In a powerful moment June’s sister, Barbra Greer speaking in 2007, shared:

“The legacy she left for us is to believe in yourself, to do it, don’t take a backseat, to speak up; that things are achievable, but you’ve got to work at it”

You can catch the kōrero from our crew here at this link:

Please note: one of the kaikōrero opted not to have their part shared online.
