Coromandel Community Library

Coromandel Community Library This is a small community library run mostly by volunteers for the people of Coromandel Town and surrounds.

It costs $25 per year to join, just bring proof of your address and photo ID.

COLD SUNSET – WILLIAM BOYD

Perhaps it’s no coincidence that William Boyd once penned a James Bond story [Solo]. In the past few years he’s brought his page-turning, storytelling skills to his own secret agent, a travel writer and reluctant MI6 spy, Gabriel Dax. Cold Sunset is Dax’s third outing in what feels like a series, with our man pitted against double agents and traitors in the UK, the US and the USSR.

Whereas Bond was a post-war product rooted in the 1950s, Dax operates in the early ‘60s, with a Chelsea pad in emergent Swinging London and a rural retreat in Sussex. Rooted in the 1950s, Dax is a little old to be a real Sixties shaker, preferring wh***ey to “reefer”. Boyd is excellent on cinematic period detail and, like Fleming, namedrops consumer items. Liquor is copiously consumed, although, unlike Bond, Dax has a shrink and worries about his smoking: the US Surgeon General’s 1964 cancer warning has just come out.

Boyd made his reputation as a readable literary star – Any Human Heart was arguably the apogee - and his skills are evident in Cold Sunset. However, like John Danville, another literary heavyweight who has rekindled the crime genre, there’s a sense that the Dax tales, which combine boys’ own adventure and real-life spying [Kim Philby’s betrayal, Bletchley Park’s code breakers and the Enigma machine, still secret, cast a long shadow across the story while Dax is also a KGB man] with a cast of recurring characters, are a swan song.

But like Eric Ambler, a pioneer in this shadowy field, there is a darker undercurrent, not least in Dax’s on-off love affair with his MI6 handler, Faith Green. As Dax sinks further into the espionage murk, watching his back while wondering if he’ll ever escape back into his life as a successful travel writer, he comes to a sobering realisation about the secret world in which he’s unwillingly entangled: “there was no one story, there were many, conflicting stories, but which one did you believe?” As Dax is propelled towards a cliffhanging finale, sifting truth from fantasy makes this a one-sitting pleasure.
