On the 31st of July, our Te Mana Tangata team wrapped up a 10-week long Mahi Toi workshop, facilitated by New Zealand Māori artist and carver Walter Baker, Kaiarataki Tane at Te Whāriki Manawāhine O Hauraki. 🎨

Over the 10-weeks, 12 participants discovered the meaning of some kōwhaiwhai designs and the relevant pūrākau, and learnt how to apply them to their own unique panel using exterior paint. One of the group's favourite designs was the koiri, a traditional Māori kōwhaiwhai pattern featuring repeating koru shapes, and symbolises self-reflection, nurturing and continuous growth.

We’d like to give a massive thank you to Walter for guiding us through our mahi toi journey and Te Whāriki Manawāhine O Hauraki for supporting this amazing course. Our team would also like to give a special acknowledgement to the participants who showed up, rain or shine, to partake in this incredible opportunity. 🌿

We've had an exciting week at Te Mana Tangata, kicking off with mosaics and homemade dumplings on Monday, rock collecting on Wednesday (check out that view! 👀) and finishing it off today with the last workshop of our 10-week mahi toi class.

Te Mana Tangata runs casual groups each day, bringing people together to explore different creative activities and get together in a safe, supportive space.

Last week we were lucky enough to have Keanu Manuel from Tutamure Arts, a local tā moko artist from Manaia and who is of Ngāti Porou, visit our mahi toi crew to talk about mahi moko. 🌿

This was a special opportunity for our group who have been learning how to create Māori art and discovering the meanings behind each design.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Keanu for taking time out of his busy schedule to come along and answer questions about how to study tā moko, become a practitioner and the tikanga behind certain parts of the practice. 🧡

Last Friday some of our participants were lucky enough to attend a pottery class at Driving Creek Pottery, where they learned how to create their own gorgeous bowls. ☀

Te Mana Tangata runs casual groups each day, bringing people together to explore different creative activities and get together in a safe, supportive space. This Monday we're hosting 'Mosaic Monday', where participants can begin their own mosaic projects with support from our kaimahi.

Te Mana Tangata is open to anyone in the community with a valid MSD client number.

Te Mana Tangata's Christmas Party 2026! ✨

Last month on the 19th of December, our participants enjoyed a special end of year party to celebrate all of their amazing work in 2025. Despite the weather, our team managed to get a few games of bowls in, have an amazing lunch and enjoy some gift giving and prizes. This day was made possible by everyone who purchased items at our fundraiser sale and all of the incredible local businesses below that donated goods/prizes for our participants.
