Discover how to carve wooden spoons from logs using hand tools and traditional whittling methods. This immersive two-day workshop is great for both beginners as well as more experienced carvers.

Some very exciting news from Resourceful Craft… we’ve been funded for another THREE YEARS!

We’re absolutely delighted that our Creative New Zealand funding application has been successful, giving us the support to continue the Resourceful Craft programme. A huge thank you to Creative New Zealand for believing in and supporting this mahi, ngā mihi maioha.

Thank you to the incredible craftspeople at the heart of Resourceful Craft, who so generously share their knowledge, experience and skills.

And, of course, thank you to our wonderful community. Every time you come along to a workshop, learn a new skill, make something with your hands, share what you’ve learnt, or simply tell someone else about Resourceful Craft, you’re helping keep these skills alive.

We feel incredibly lucky to be able to keep doing this work, and don’t take that lightly. Here’s to another three years of bringing people together to learn practical, resourceful craft skills for the wellbeing of people and planet.

We’re already busy dreaming up Resourceful Craft 2027... more on that very soon!

Guest tutor Deb Donnelly is a Kāpiti-based interdisciplinary artist, textile designer and arts educator whose practice explores sustainable textiles, printmaking, and mindful stitching. Her work draws on colour, texture and traditional textile techniques, often transforming found and repurposed materials into contemporary textile works, which she has exhibited through galleries across Aotearoa and Asia.

Originally trained in textile design, Deb has more than 30 years’ teaching experience in schools and creative communities. She has taught indigo dyeing in Aotearoa since 2010, alongside shibori, sashiko, boro, eco-printing, drawing and design. With her Japanese heritage, Deb regularly travels to Japan to deepen her knowledge and practice of Japanese textile traditions.

Learn to transform logs into spoons using hand tools and traditional techniques.

Come and spend two days with craftsperson Douglas Horrell for this hands-on immersive workshop set in a gorgeous woodland (can you spot the pīwakawaka in this video?).

Working with locally sourced greenwood, you will gain the fundamentals of designing, splitting, and shaping wood to continue carving confidently at home.

This workshop is for aspiring woodworkers both beginner and intermediate, as well as those simply in need of a mindful weekend.

Gorgeous handmade spoons carved by Douglas Horrell.

You can learn to carve a spoon from scratch yourself in our upcoming two-day comprehensive workshop, set in a coppice woodland. Using hand tools and traditional whittling methods, you’ll discover how to design, split out and shape green wood with an axe, whittle your spoon with knives, and sharpen your tools.
