The 2026 South Island Golden Gloves went off.

Well done to the Rangiora boxing club hosting a terrific event. Great to mix and mingle with our South Island boxing fraternity who are all collaborative and awesome to deal with. Andrew Wilson Photography again taking some great moments behind the lens.

Our team trained hard leading up to the event, but nothing beats real competition, to test our skills, overcome adversity and show our progression.

Unfortunately quite few of the team couldn’t secure bouts with some of our top talent securing their South Island Golden Gloves titles unopposed with opponents pulling out or moving weights.

🥇Riley Te Ao 75KG Youth Open
🥇Reggie Entese 57KG Junior Open
🥇Maxwell Ross 63KG Junior Open
🥇Regan Clemence 75KG Youth Novice

Moving on to those who got the opportunity to compete.

Andrew opened the weekend for us going up against a tough, slick boxer from Queenstown. A good showing from Andrew but not good enough to get the nod, going down to a 4-1 split decision.

Chris announced himself on the big stage with a big unanimous decision win against a former NZ Champion with impressive timing and great footwork getting in and out of range for an open Golden Gloves title.

Jaime was next and battled through against an aggressive come forward opponent to come out on top with a unanimous decision win for an open Golden Gloves title

Golden Gloves time is Hot Wingz time. 🍗William came up against a tough opponent but did enough stringing some good combos together for a split decision win for his third open Golden Glove title and in his second weight class.

Wolf finished the event off for us in only his third bout stepping up into the open division. Wolf boxed brilliantly putting an 8 count on his opponent in the first round and used his excellent footwork to claim a unanimous decision win for his open Golden Glove Title.

A couple bonus awards at the end with Wolf being awarded the trophy for best Junior/Cadet of the tournament and Jaime being awarded best boxer of the tournament other than the most scientific.

Great to have some great support from our team in the crowd too, including 2 of Papanui’s finest in Tom Weastell and Christian Tikao.

Well done team. What a dominant Golden Gloves display winning 4 of our 5 bouts and picking up 7 open Golden Glove titles, the hard work is paying off!!

We’ve got a busy June/July coming up with 6 valuable opportunities to compete in a row lined up from 13 June- 18 July.

Big Weekend for our team in 2 different parts of the country with fights on in Picton and Auckland.

Thank you to Glen and the Arapawa team for having us and thanks to Riverside for being great company and a massive thank you Pub Charity Limited for the support to get us there.

Well done to our newest coach Ben on leading the team up in Picton, great job

Up in Auckland, Isaac, Paul and Trish at the Auckland Boxing Association are accommodating as always thank you, and thank you to the Bobby Foundation for getting us there.

In Picton Wolf was excellent coming away with a UD win with excellent range against a cagey Southpaw, Andrew had a competitive tussle struggling with his opponent’s movement but getting in some nice body shots and William was unlucky not to get the win against a awkward southpaw.

In Auckland Reggie picked up a SD win vs a strong opponent, Thomas and Maxwell had close bouts going down by decision with Maxwell putting an 8 count on his opponent. Regan battled a much more experienced opponent in a competitive decision loss, Sam wasn’t on the mark this time having an early night at the office Riley had a great performance picking up a stoppage win and Chris finished it off for us with a UD win against a much older and bigger opponent.

Most of the team got a run leading up to the South Island Golden Gloves in 2 weeks so will be firing on all cylinders

A relatively quiet night for us at the Canterbury match bout event, only 3 of the team on after we had some opponent withdrawals.

Jett started us off, after 2 years out of the ring, she gave as good as she got and scored with her jab often up the middle, however her opponents forward pressure was preferred by the judges for a deserved decision victory.

Finn S was up next and unfortunately caught a good shot and couldn’t continue.

Regan finished us off, and we possibly may have rushed him back a bit early from injury. But he got the job done showing tonnes of ticka (ya can’t coach it) in the last round to press forward and get the decision win.

Some great snaps again from Andrew Wilson Photography.

Thanks for running a good event and cheers for to the officials for their work.

We go again on the 16th of May to get most of the team a run before the South Island Golden Gloves

Lads trip to Gore 🏳️‍🌈 and the boys did not disappoint

Maxwell started us off with terrific boxing with great pressure and scoring shots. Boxing is a subjective sport but I wasn’t aware judges were fond of running away the whole bout and slappy punches. Maxwell missed out somehow 🤷

Chris had a wild battle against an undefeated opponent. Dealt with some adversity and put the afterburners on in round 2 for a stoppage win No Mas.

Thomas was excellent on the front foot mixing up his levels for a terrific UD win.

Wolf treated the crowd to his skills in an Exhibition (maybe we should’ve made it a proper fight?) against a heavier more experienced opponent, nice work mate.

Hotwingz 🥒 got back on the horse using his experience in the third round to score a UD win with some great body work

Andrew finished the night against a home town hero and in a close fight just missed out in a split decision, with his opponent’s body work getting him over the line.

Thanks to the lovely Gore crew, you were amazing and thanks to Pub Charity Limited for getting us here.

A big weekend at the South Island novice tournament a club tournament run in championship format.

2 rings and close to 100 bouts, somehow a lady who just had a baby a week prior managed to run this whole event. You’re a super woman Holly. Well done to you and your Woolston Boxing crew for all you do to boost participation of our sport. The officials did a great job of managing the chaos too.

Andrew picked up 2 wins this weekend behind a great jab, great composure and listening really well to his corner.

Wolf showed how talented he is with a great UD win.

Finn Y won convincingly with some good body punching.

Finn S picked up a split decision win with a good jab, nice uppercuts and some nice body punching.

Maxwell had his best performance to date, unfortunately coming up against a strong opponent who has competed at the NZ Champs. Even in a loss we were very proud and impressed with the bout from Maxwell.

Sam picked up a split decision win with a higher work rate in the later rounds getting him over the line.

Thomas had a great debut just missing out by split decision in a bout that could’ve gone either way.

Tommy unfortunately copped a big shot in the last round.

Jerry came up against a good opponent and didn’t have the answers to his questions.

Solid outing for the team, big April and May coming up.

Not our usual scene, but went off this weekend!!

Broc and Sam are huge supporters of our club and our vision so it was a delight to help them work towards their individual goals.

Broc was up first and followed the game plan brilliantly getting behind his double jab to set up nice straight right hands. Unfortunately he sustained an injury to his knee forcing our corner to throw in the towel early in the second when we saw he could barely keep stable. Hard luck Broc.

Then moving on to the main event of the night. Sam Lentjes having his professional debut.

The game plan went out the window and a 4 round war ensued.

Both men battered each other with all up for grabs in the 4th and final round.

Sam boxed more composed in the last round, landed a big right hand and then followed up to put his opponent on the canvas for the 4th round KO win.

It wasn’t pretty, but jeez both men showed a lot of heart in a brutal heavyweight slugfest.

Congratulations Sam on your professional win.

Thanks to Reece and his PBO team for an epic night.

Back to more familiar territory for us as we are back into the amateur scene.
