What a week, what a NZ Championships. Thank you to Eddie, Sandra and the team at the Whanganui Boxing Association for stepping up and saving the show.

The Canterbury Boxing coaches and management team looked after our team really well as always, getting them primed and ready to perform.

And perform the Papanui contingent did.

William had an excellent QF win against a strong southpaw. He followed that up in his semi final against the current NZ Champ. William had a great performance in a close bout going down in a close split decision.

Riley had a great battle in his QF going down on split decision.

Jaime had a great win in her SF, picking up the unanimous decision. Jaime had a great fight in the final bringing the fight to her opponent, narrowly missing out by split decision to pick up a silver medal. We are so proud of her progress and dedication throughout the year.

Wolf in his first year of competing has become a NZ Champion. Wolf came up against an experienced Auckland opponent who was a NZ Champion in 2025, Wolf followed the game plan really well putting on the pressure and mixing his levels to pick up a split decision win.

Chris also picked up a NZ Championship putting the cherry on top of an excellent season for him with his 9th win of the year. Strong combinations and an 8 count on his opponent secured his unanimous win and the NZ title.

Reggie was the star of the show picking up a unanimous win in his semi final before he stepped it up in his final with an amazing performance to take out his second NZ title. Following his performance Reggie was awarded the WP Somerville cup for the most Scientific Junior boxer of the Championships, a testament to his talent and skill.

A terrific championships for our club churning out our 44th, 45th and 46th NZ title and coming so close to a 47th. All the work done by the team in the gym has supported our team getting there.

Another year and another terrific night of fights, clubs from around the country brought their A game, dishing out some heavy hits as well. Not the greatest outing for the team but with the NZ champs around the corner there are positive signs moving forward.

It’s always hard seeing our lot hurt as we care about them as people and their health is the no1 priority.

Maxwell didn’t get out of second gear loosing a decision.

Thomas followed and after a strong first round didn’t follow up enough to also go down on decision.

Lucas got some revenge on an opponent who beat him a month ago showing great skills and improvement.

Chris took on a boy 2 years his senior who is going to the NZ Champs and got the job done picking up his 8th win of the year.

Reggie started really well but possibly came out the gates a little too hot, after a good comeback round from his opponent it was all on in the third round. Reggie landed a lot of nice clean right hands but his opponents body work was preferred by 2 of the 3 judges.

Jaime boxed well in stages landing some beautiful clean shots however her heavier opponent’s smothering style took its toll earning her the decision.

Finn was a tad gun-shy and needed to follow up more, loosing on decision also.

Hayden came back after a 2 year injury enforced lay off. He listened well changing up his style as he went up a weight class to get a fight. Hayden’s work rate got him the nod with some good hand speed.

William was in good form landing some good counter shots, followed by some spicy combinations for the first round win.

The evening finished poorly for the team with both Sam and Andrew way on top in their bouts, unfortunately both visiting the canvas for stoppage losses. Rest up fellas.

Thanks to Canterbury Boxing for looking after our lads at the Brisbane International Golden Gloves. Great for our guys to get some international experience

Reggie and Chris both just missed out on gold medals after great performances in close bouts.

Sam and Riley missed the mark in their opening bouts, however both got the opportunity to have challenge bouts later in the tournament where they both picked up wins.

2 unanimous wins in Timaru for Lucas and Andrew.

Lucas gave up a lot of weight, but picked his shots well for lots of clean scoring blows.

Andrew was slightly messy but powered through with some big shots for the win.

2 weeks until our very own event Heavy Hitters 2026.

Thanks to Shamrock Boxing Association for having us yesterday afternoon.

Jaime picked up a great unanimous win before enjoying the Nyika vs Masson word title eliminator in the evening.

Jaime’s prep leading up to this contest was excellent, leading to a quality performance.

Close but no cigar was the theme for the team this weekend at the Canterbury champs. With the 9 bouts we competed in ending in 5 split decisions and only 1 of those split decisions going our way.

🐺Wolf moved up a weight to secure some ring time and was at his usual best picking up a win in his semi on Saturday, unfortunately after a great performance on Sunday he wasn’t rewarded with win he deserved. Well done Wolf.

Reggie and Maxwell both came up against some quality performers and were off the mark this weekend.

Chris took a note out of his coaches book and backed up his footy game in the morning with a great win in his final going up a weight to become Canterbury Champion.

Lucas had his debut and showed plenty of skill, just letting his nerves get to him and running out of steam at the end to go down by split decision.

Andrew stepped in late notice and got the job done with a big left hook finish in the second round.

William had a close bout missing out by the barest of margins (1point on 1 scorecard). It was all up for grabs going into the last round and William grabbed the final stanza 4-1 on the cards. Unfortunately the point he missed out on he needed to get his hand raised.

Thomas finished the weekend off for us in another split decision contest going down in a tight one.

Not too far off the mark, plenty of opportunities coming up to show off the improvements and adjustments.

We finished the weekend off with having Wolf, Chris, Reggie, Riley, Jaime, Sam and William named in the Canterbury team, well done guys.

In the immortal words of Little Nicky “Popeye’s Chicken is f@!&$n awesome” and the boys got to enjoy some Popeyes after some great performances.

Chris came up against a Southpaw boy 2 years his senior and turned on the pressure to collect a couple of counts and a unanimous decision win.

Andrew got back in the winners column after stepping up late notice for a split decision win. He landed some big shots on a tough opponent.

Cherry on top at the end of the night, Chris was awarded the award for best boxer of the tournament, well done Chris!!!

Thanks to Pub Charity Limited for their continued support making this trip down south possible.

Canterbury champs in 2 weeks and we will be bringing a strong squad to take out some titles.

The NZGGs were excellently hosted by the Woolston boxing club, thanks to the amazing Holly and her team.

We had 4 boxers on with 3 taking on the best of the North island.

Riley didn’t fire this week, loosing a decision to a quality opponent.

Maxwell boxed well scoring regularly on his opponent and did well in his defence to take most of his opponent’s slappy shots on the elbows. Maxwell put an 8 count on his opponent in the third round to round out what looked to be a good win. Unfortunately the judges didn’t agree and Maxwell missed out on getting his hand raised by split decision. We’ve been really impressed with Maxwell’s improvement and development this season. He’s put in some solid performances.

Wolf competed in his fourth and fifth bouts this weekend coming up against boxers with 4 or 5 times the experience. That didn’t phase Wolf who won his first bout with excellent use of pressure and range to win a unanimous decision and then was beaten in a split decision by the barest of margins in his final missing out by 1 point. We are so proud of you and how you continue to grow and improve.

Leaving the best to last our tough little tank Chris picked up his 5th win of the year and the NZ Golden Glove 52KG cadet title walking down his taller opponent with great head movement, a great jab and well timed right hands to take out a unanimous decision win. Well Done Chris!!!
