When the way ahead is difficult to see, focusing on something small can help us find a point of connection.

It might be reaching out to someone we trust, returning to something that brings us comfort, spending time with something or someone that matters to us, or taking one small step towards something that feels meaningful.

These moments may seem small, but they can begin to restore some of what feels distant or difficult to reach.

We do not have to see the whole way forward. Sometimes reconnecting with one small part of ourselves or our lives can be enough for now.

Kupu o te Wiki

This week we explore the concept of kahupō as it relates to the journey of healing and wellness for survivors of sexual violence and family violence, and their whānau.

Within Transforming Whānau Violence: A Conceptual Framework, kahupō is used to describe a state that can emerge when violence disrupts wellbeing and creates imbalance. It provides a way of understanding some of the impacts that violence can have on our sense of connection, purpose and wellbeing.

There are times when understanding needs time and space to arrive.

Stepping away from everyday distractions
and entering a place where we feel safe and connected can create the quiet needed to become receptive.

We may arrive with something we are seeking clarity on, or simply with an openness to what may emerge.

Choosing a place where we feel secure,
and ensuring someone knows where we are,
allows us to settle more fully into that space
without becoming disconnected from support.

The purpose is not to force an answer,
but to create the conditions
where insight has space to find us.

Whānau Tautoko

When someone we care about is reluctant,
our instinct may be to encourage them forward,
to reassure them, or help them move beyond
what appears to be holding them back.

Hesitation, uncertainty, pulling back,
or an unwillingness to continue
are all reasons to slow down and listen.

Consent is not something we encourage
someone towards. It needs space to be freely given,
and the freedom to be withheld or withdrawn.

Supporting someone can mean creating space
for hesitation without rushing to resolve it,
listening without deciding what it means for them,
and allowing them the time they need
to understand what they are feeling.

Sometimes the most meaningful support
is not helping someone take the next step,
but remaining alongside them
while they decide whether that step
is right for them at all.

Within the context of sexual violence and family violence, recognising reluctance can be important.

There may be times when something does not feel right, when we hesitate, pull back or feel unwilling to continue. This week we explore korongatā, and the importance of recognising what we are feeling without pressure to move beyond it.

Confidence can be nurtured within whānau through the everyday ways we encourage one another to trust ourselves, make choices, try something new, and learn through experience.

When confidence is given room to grow, māia becomes something we strengthen together, creating a whānau environment where each person feels supported to stand with assurance in who they are.
