Big ideas for animals need people willing to back them. ❤️

Yesterday we shared our biggest research project yet - a New Zealand-first investigation into the barriers standing in the way of moving beyond the harmful use of animals in science.

Yesterday we also thanked you for helping us get this project off the ground. Today, we also want to say a huge thank you to Pathfinder Asset Management, whose significant funding has helped make this ambitious project possible.

BAR Co-Founder Elaine recently caught up with the Pathfinder team in Auckland to celebrate the project and the work now underway. 🎉

The evidence we gather has the potential to help inform policy, funding, institutional change, future research and advocacy- giving us something NZ has never had before: a nationwide evidence base for breaking down the barriers.

Thank you Pathfinder for believing in this work - and in what it could mean for animals and science in Aotearoa.

We’ve just launched something that’s never been done in New Zealand before! ❤️

We want to answer the question everyone asks - Why are animals still being harmed in science when innovative, non-animal methods are advancing around the world?

It’s a big question - so we’ve launched a New Zealand-first research project to help answer it.

Together with EthicoNZ, BAR is investigating the barriers that are preventing or slowing the uptake of non-animal methods across Aotearoa New Zealand’s research, testing and teaching sector.

We’ll be hearing directly from the people working within the science and research community to understand what’s getting in the way - and, importantly, what needs to change.

Because if we want to create a future where animals are no longer harmed in science, we first need to understand the barriers standing in the way.

This is a HUGE project, thanks to you, and we’re incredibly excited to finally share it with you. ❤️

We can learn about animals without harming them. ❤️🐘

A fascinating new study has explored something pretty incredible: whether wild African elephants may self-medicate using plants, minerals and clay found in their environment.

Researchers drew on observations and local knowledge of wild elephants in Kenya to investigate plants and clay the elephants appear to seek out when sick or injured.

And the best part? The research was observational and non-invasive, meaning the elephants weren’t captured, experimented on or deliberately harmed as part of the study.

It’s a great reminder that studying animals and learning more about their lives doesn’t have to come at their expense.

Science can help us understand animals while respecting them at the same time. ❤️🔬🐘

Good news for animals and science! ❤️

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced changes to the rules for approving medicines that will remove outdated references to animal testing and better support innovative, non-animal methods.

Put simply, the changes will make it clearer that companies don’t have to submit data from animal tests to have their medicines approved.

Every barrier removed brings us another step closer to a future where animals are no longer harmed in science - and that’s worth celebrating! ❤️🌏
