Yesterday was such a special day – it was National Animal Rights Day. 💕🐰

Our Co-Founder, Tara, was honoured to be invited to speak at the Christchurch event and share a message of hope, progress, and collaboration.

As Tara reflected in her speech, none of us can do everything, but together, we can do a remarkable amount. Every person, every action, and every effort contributes something valuable to the bigger picture for animals.

It was inspiring to see so many people from across the animal protection movement come together, united by a shared belief that a better future for animals is possible and that we each have a role to play in creating it. ✨

This weekend, we'll be standing alongside compassionate people from across Ōtautahi to celebrate National Animal Rights Day.

💕Animals are at the heart of everything we do at BAR, and we're excited that our Co-Founder, Tara Jackson, will be speaking at this special event!

Tara will be sharing why working together for animals is so powerful. From each small step away from animal testing to transforming the systems that allow harmful practices to continue in science, meaningful progress happens when we unite behind a common goal.

The future won't change on its own. But together, we can help build one where animals are no longer harmed in the name of science.

We hope to see you there!💕🐰

The use of dogs in animal experiments has been global news lately. But many people are surprised to learn that dogs are still used for science here in Aotearoa, New Zealand too.

Based on NZ statistics from 2022–2024, an average of:
📊 901 dogs were used for research, testing, and teaching each year
📊 25 dogs were killed each year

‣ breeding units
‣ farms
‣ and public sources (including companion animals)

While the scale may differ from what happens overseas, we believe no single animal should be harmed for science.

It’s important that the public has access to transparent, accurate information about the use of animals in science in New Zealand.

💬 What additional information would you like to know about animal experimentation in NZ?

And if this post shocks you, please remember:
When you stand with BAR, you stand up for all animals harmed in science.

Together, we are working to remove the barriers keeping science tied to animal harm and helping accelerate the transition toward ethical, effective alternatives. 💕🐶

What an incredible evening for animals!💕

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our special after-hours fundraising event with LUSH Cosmetics in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.

It was a beautiful night filled with inspiring conversations, vegan treats, mocktails, cruelty-free bath bomb making, and so much support for a future where science can thrive without harming animals.

We’re so grateful to LUSH for partnering with Beyond Animal Research (BAR) and for their long-standing commitment to ending animal testing and supporting ethical innovation.

A massive thank you as well to the amazing local businesses who helped make the evening so special. Your manaakitanga was felt by all:

🌱 Green Dinner Table
🍹 The Good Cocktail Co
☕ Otautahi Oats - Fresh, Local, The Best Oat Milk
🍪 Lorraine's Cookies

And finally, thank you to every single person who bought a ticket, donated, entered the raffle, shared the event and showed up to support this crucial mahi for animals.

Here are some photos from the evening ✨

🐭💕 Meet Xena, Skitter, Splinter and Manis!

We recently worked with the University of Auckland to help rehome these beautiful rats and just look at them now 🥹

Xena, Skitter, Splinter and Manis (pronounced Ma-niece, meaning “sweet” in Indonesian) are now living their best lives with Sylvia and Lukas, who are completely smitten with their new family members.

Moments like this don’t just happen, it takes care, time, and commitment behind the scenes to make rehoming possible, even for a small group of animals.

We want to say a heartfelt thank you to the university staff who helped make this happen! 💕

🌍 Today is World Day for Animals in Labs!🐁💕

Every year on 24 April, we recognise the animals still harmed in science around the world and the growing movement to change this.

When this day was first established in 1979, it was called World Day for Lab Animals.

But over time, as understanding has grown around the power of language, that name has evolved to World Day for Animals in Labs.

💭 Why does this matter?
The words we use shape how we think.
Terms like “lab animals,” “farm animals,” or “pound dogs” can unintentionally define animals by their use to humans.

Shifting our language helps shift perspective - towards recognising animals for who they are, not what they’re used for.

And that shift is important, because animals are sentient. Recognising this is essential if we want to move towards a world where animals are not harmed, exploited, or made to suffer for human purposes.
