The OCBC would like to encourage members of the community to join the Orere Awa Restoration team down at Turners farm.
They'll be saying a few words and planting a golden totora in memorial of the community members and loved ones who have passed away recently.

This will be done around 11:00 this Saturday (tomorrow) and community members are welcome to say a few words in remembrance and welcome to join the OAR team afterwards for the community planting session,
Please park on the road and make your way down on foot rather than driving down the gravel driveway (by bridge) for safety reasons.

Hopefully see you there,

OCBC team

Emergency response plan.

To all Orere residents,

recently we were faced with a possible emergency with Cylone Vaianu and had to quickly pull together a response team to get ourselves into a position where we could support ourselves for a period of time if needed.
As proud as I am of the work we did in that time it’s clear we need a more robust system and over the next few months we’ll be developing a more up to date plan for how we manage situations like this going forward.
This plan predominantly will be to ensure measures are in place to help Orere look after itself for up to three days, some of you may recognise this preparation as Orere’s community response plan or more recently the community resilience plan.

Whilst this plan is under the guidance of the OCBC it is ultimately the responsibility of the community, all of us.
We currently have an interim team and will be working towards formalizing this in the coming weeks but as we progress we will be canvasing the community for support and feedback.

In the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to call
Jared McKay (OCBC chair)
on 0225687307

Thanks in advance for your engagement and we’ll be in touch soon.

To our Wonderful Orere Community, Volunteers & Sponsors......
Thank you for your recent support of our Easter Weekend Fishing Competition on Sunday 5th April
With a bit of an upredictable weather forecast and small window of fishable conditions, we did go ahead with our planned Easter fundraiser.

We still managed to pull off a very sucessful day, thanks to our very dedicated Fisho’s, generous sponsors, committed team and hardworking volunteers.
The Conditions were trying to say the least, time short, our fisho’s did well to donate around 102kg of fish to be Auctioned under our MPI licience, raising funds for Orere school towards their senior end of year camp.
The fish auction raised $1786.00 for which we know will be received with much thanks.
This is the first comp we can remember with not 1, but 3 kingfish caught, the heaviest being from a very well known lady angler Rebekah Tossell, weighing 15.070kg.
Not only was this a beautiful catch, but it was bought by another huge local supporter, for a fantastic donation of $500 !! wow massive thanks to Tere Tou for getting the audience excited and kick starting this auction with such a great bid.
On the fishing side of things the heaviest snapper was won by Alex Dean at 2.6kg.
A great Kahawai (1.945) caught by lady angler Hope Stein, and a beautiful Trevally (1.070) by junior angler, Otis Jones.
Adult Mystery weight was 1.25 kg chosen by our sponsors Chris & Nei Loftin, won by Mark Wallis with a 1.26kg snapper.

The kids were also given a wee bit of Easter sweetness in their goodie bags, a colouring competition designed especially for the comp by Hayley Bos, Easter Egg Guess and they coloured in wood Easter egg shapes to hang on our Easter Cross, made by Rudy Baptist.
Every Junior received goodie bags and prizes with the lovely donation support from a local community member.
Raffles sponsored by Burnsco, Firewood Guys, Shorebird Cycles, and PaknSave, were snapped up, with extra Quickfires added as the audience were hungry for a chance to win meatpacks, and GBK Baitpacks, all proving to be popular and raising great money for the club.
Spot prizes were sponsored By Bolt Electrical, Clevedon Oysters, KKbay Garage, Super Liquor Clevedon.
Rods were donated as prizes for our younger anglers by Aaron Stein & Anita Tou, discounted Rods purchased through Composite Developments & TopCatch Clevedon.
Keeping our Catches cold with Grunta’s Ice and storage of product at Orere Store.

We wish to thank all our Cash Donations towards the fishing prizes from CIS- Sean Dalton, Bryon Corfield, Chris & Nei Loftin, Edward Pram, WilMarine-Billy Williams, 2DumbGirlz, Howick and Vouchers from BayView Hotel.

Smash Burgers, chips & chicken nuggets all popular and filling the bellies of the hungry crowd.
In all, a super successful day and fantastic way to finish off for the season.

We wish to say a huge thankyou for your continued support, without you, none of these events would be possible!!

Kind Regards and huge appreciation from - OCBC Team.

This is a message on behalf of the Fire brigade, Health centre and OCBC.

Hopefully everyone has been keeping themselves safe and up to date with how cyclone Vaianu has progressed. We’re happy to report that we’ve had no incidents but remain ready in case assistance is needed until this weather event has passed. Below we have a few suggestions and would like to remind people again that in an emergency don’t be reluctant to call 111, they will address any issues and direct you to the appropriate support network.

• Rain has been heavy so it’s advised to remain inside and avoid driving out of the village if possible as there is a lot of water from kawakawa bay onwards and this is expected to increase.
• The fire service would like to reiterate safety when using candles or gas should power go out.
• If you can do one more check in with your neighbours.

We’d like to acknowledge the medical support team, Fire brigade, Manni at the shop, Sonny down at the campground and the other groups who have supported the community by volunteering their services, premises and vehicles during this event. Although were not out of the woods yet it’s encouraging to see how our community has stuck together so far.
Again for all non-urgent support we have the following people available so don’t hesitate to keep in touch!

Community members of Orere point

This is a message on behalf of the Fire brigade, Health centre and OCBC.
We’re currently putting in place a plan to support the community should it be affected by the weather over the next day or two. How it looks depends heavily on what conditions we’re exposed to so first and foremost we’d like to pass on the following notes to help guide people over the short term.
• If there is an emergency (if you need to vacate your house) then trained emergency responders are the best people for this job, don’t be reluctant to call 111, they will address your issues and direct you to the appropriate support network.
• If you don’t feel safe in your home then again call 111.
• For new members the best cell phone coverage can be at the beach, obviously only if this can be done safely.
• Take the time to chat with your neighbours, find out how you can support each other or even just to touch base.
• Have a plan for your pets.
• If you want information then civil defence (get ready) is a good option to keep yourself informed.
• Be extra careful if power goes out and you use candles/ gas etc.
• Make sure you have the basic amenities should power go out, nothing us Orereites haven’t faced before.

There is a team who are setting up plans for a communication hub. This will be based in the library and health clinic area should it be required. Well communicate if this goes ahead.
All the appropriate groups have been advised and we have several options available to us depending on how things progress during this weather event. If things change we’ll do our best to keep us all connected.
Lastly, please be patient and understanding with each other during times like this, if you need help then here are a few numbers you can call in the meantime for non-urgent support.
