In celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, we kicked off the physical activities for our Tech Girls Advocacy Drive, taking conversations about STEM, AI, digital skills, and future opportunities directly to girls in schools.

For Day 1, we visited Sonmori Comprehensive High School, Ifako-Ijaiye, and Ifako-Ijaiye Comprehensive High School, Lagos, where we engaged students on the possibilities within technology and how building digital skills can shape the opportunities available to them.

At Tech4Dev, we believe early exposure matters. Introducing girls to STEM and AI can help them discover new interests, broaden their career aspirations, and begin to see themselves not just as users of technology, but as people who can build, create, and pursue opportunities within the digital economy.

The Tech Girls Advocacy Drive continues throughout October as we reach more schools and encourage more girls to explore the possibilities technology can create for their future.

In celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, we kicked off our Tech Girls Advocacy Drive, a school outreach initiative designed to inspire young girls to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the opportunities digital skills create for their future.

For Day 1, we visited Sonmori Comprehensive High School, Ifako-Ijaiye, and Ifako-Ijaiye Comprehensive High School, Lagos, where we engaged students in conversations about technology, innovation, and the possibilities that come with acquiring digital skills.

At Tech4Dev, we believe that technology is a powerful pathway to economic prosperity. By introducing young girls to STEM and AI early, we are helping them discover new interests, broaden their career aspirations, and understand how digital skills can open doors to decent work, entrepreneurship, and opportunities to thrive in an increasingly digital economy.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, innovate, and participate in shaping the future of technology. Through the Tech Girls Advocacy Drive, we are taking this message directly to schools and encouraging more girls to see themselves not just as users of technology, but as future creators, innovators, and leaders who can contribute to building a more inclusive digital economy.

Some moments are worth revisiting, and the Tech4Dev AI Inter-District Secondary School Challenge is one of them.

Earlier this year, 135 secondary school girls across Lagos Education Districts II and IV in Nigeria had the opportunity to learn about AI, identify problems around them, and explore how technology could be used to develop solutions.

The goal was to spark their curiosity about technology, expose them to the opportunities in the field, and help them see that they could be more than users of technology, they could build with it too.

27 schools submitted their entries, and six made it to the Grand Finale, where the girls presented AI-powered solutions addressing challenges including healthcare access, bullying, student safety, and learning accessibility.

As we continue to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child, their journey is a reminder of why early exposure matters. When girls have access to the right knowledge, tools, and opportunities, we give them room to explore their ideas, build relevant skills, and see a future for themselves in technology.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to dream, learn, grow, and become all she can be.

But for that potential to become possibility, girls need access to quality education, digital skills, mentorship, supportive communities, and opportunities that allow them to discover what they are capable of.

At Tech4Dev, we have seen what can happen when girls are given the opportunity to learn and create. From introducing secondary school girls to technology and AI to creating spaces where they can identify problems within their communities and develop solutions, we continue to see girls show us just how much is possible when they have access to the right opportunities.

As we mark the International Day of the Girl Child, we celebrate girls everywhere and reaffirm the importance of creating a world where every girl has the opportunity, support, and resources she needs to thrive and shape her own future.

Because when we invest in girls today, we are investing in the women, leaders, innovators, and changemakers of tomorrow.
