Women Environmental Programme (WEP) Conducts Community Mapping, Beneficiary Selection, and Project Inception Meeting in Nasarawa State.

Women Environmental Programme (WEP) conducted a community mapping and beneficiary selection exercise in Doma Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, under the project "Strengthening Community Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods for Rural Women." The organization also held a project inception meeting in Lafia to formally launch implementation.

The project aims to impact over 1,000 households across the benefitting communities of Alagye, Alwaza, Iwashi, Rutu and Kawo through Climate Smart Agriculture initiatives.

Both activities were highly engaging, bringing together representatives from relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), traditional leaders and community representatives from the benefitting communities.

The Gender Snapshot 2026

Yesterday, on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, UN Women launched its latest report, Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2026.

Women Environmental Programme (WEP) was privileged to participate in the launch of this important report, which provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of gender equality across the globe.

The Gender Snapshot 2026 presents the latest data and evidence on gender equality, highlighting key trends, achievements, and persistent gaps. In her opening remarks, Ms. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, emphasized the central theme of this year's report:
“This year’s Gender Snapshot is about power, who holds it and who hoards it.”

The report reveals several sobering realities that underscore the urgent need for accelerated action:
• With only four years remaining until the 2030 deadline, none of the targets under Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) are currently on track to be achieved. At the current pace, it could take 171 years to fully realize gender equality.

• Progress in women’s political leadership is slowing, with men still leading six out of every seven countries worldwide.

• Women with disabilities continue to face significant barriers to leadership and decision-making, including within institutions established to represent their interests.

The findings serve as a stark reminder that achieving gender equality requires stronger political commitment, increased investment, and deliberate efforts to dismantle the structural barriers that continue to limit women’s participation and leadership across all sectors.

Our side event, “Ensuring Climate Justice Through the Climate Justice Fellowship for Young Women,” was a resounding success.

The discussions were honest, inspiring, and solution-driven. Rather than focusing solely on the barriers women face in climate leadership or the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women and girls, we highlighted powerful examples of women leading transformative climate action. We showcased innovative solutions developed by women and identified concrete opportunities for women to drive climate resilience, sustainability, and inclusive development in their communities and beyond.

As world leaders gather at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York to address interconnected global challenges, including conflict, climate change, inequality, technological disruption, and declining trust in international institutions, we urge them to recognize a fundamental truth: the absence of inclusive leadership lies at the heart of many of these challenges.

To build a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future, women and young women must not only be included in decision-making processes but also empowered to lead them. Investing in women's leadership, knowledge, and innovation is not merely a matter of justice; it is a practical and necessary pathway to achieving effective climate action and lasting solutions to the world's most pressing challenges.

Meet One of Our Speakers: Lyzianah Emakoua

As we continue the countdown to our side event at New York Climate Week 2026, Ensuring Climate Justice Through Climate Justice Fellowship for Young Women, we are delighted to introduce Lyzianah Emakoua, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Community Impact and Sustainability (CCIS).

Lyzianah Emakoua is a passionate advocate for sustainable development, climate justice, and community-centered solutions that advance social and environmental resilience. Through her leadership at CCIS, she has championed initiatives that empower women, young people, and marginalized communities to participate meaningfully in climate action and sustainable development processes.

With extensive experience in community engagement, environmental sustainability, and capacity development, Lyzianah works at the intersection of climate change, gender equality, and social inclusion, helping to strengthen local responses to some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing communities today. Her work emphasizes the importance of ensuring that vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls, are not only protected from the impacts of climate change but are also recognized as leaders and agents of change in building a more sustainable future.

Meet another inspiring voice joining our side event, “Ensuring Climate Justice Through the Climate Justice Fellowship for Young Women,” during New York Climate Week 2026.

We are proud to introduce Olasimbo Sojinrin, CEO of Solar Sister and a leading advocate for women-led clean energy solutions across Africa.

Olasimbo Sojinrin is the CEO of Solar Sister, a social enterprise advancing women’s economic opportunity and clean energy access across Africa. She brings more than 18 years of experience in sustainable development, gender advocacy, energy access, and community engagement across Africa.

Olasimbo joined Solar Sister in 2013 as Country Director for Nigeria, where she built the organization’s country program, and later served as Chief Operating Officer before becoming CEO in 2025. Previously, she managed development projects for organizations including the British Council and the Bank of Industry/United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

A leading advocate for women’s leadership in the energy sector, Olasimbo has spoken at national and international forums, including the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and the UN Commission on Science and Technology. She is an Acumen West Africa Fellow and Nigerian Leadership Institute Fellow and serves as President of the Women’s Consortium of Nigeria.

Olasimbo holds a degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a Master’s in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos.
