This video tells the inspiring story of a deaf lawyer who faced criticism, barriers, and countless challenges on his journey.

From primary school to secondary education, university, the Nigerian Law School, and eventually the courtroom, he refused to let his disability define what was possible for him.

His story is a powerful reminder that disability does not mean inability. Your journey may be different, and you may face obstacles along the way, but giving up should never be the only option.

To every person living with a disability: believe in yourself. You have ability, you have potential, and you have a future. Whatever you aspire to become or achieve, keep learning, keep pushing, and keep believing.

Your disability is only one part of your story. It does not determine the limits of your dreams.

His name is Nehemiah Danjuma.

A young Nigerian.

A man who is deaf.

And despite every obstacle placed before him…

He has just been called to the Nigerian Bar.

Think about that.

While many people were busy asking what he could never do…

Nehemiah was quietly doing what many believed was impossible.

He wasn’t asking for sympathy.

He wasn’t asking for special treatment.

He was studying.

Working.

Persevering.

Preparing.

Until one day…

He stood where only those who had earned it could stand.

Not because someone felt sorry for him.

But because he deserved to be there.

Yet instead of celebrating this remarkable achievement, many people questioned whether he belonged.

That made me ask myself a simple but uncomfortable question:

When did we become a society that sees disability before we see determination?

The truth is, being deaf does not mean a person cannot think.

It does not mean a person cannot reason.

It does not mean a person cannot analyse complex issues, solve problems, or stand before the law as an advocate.

And it certainly does not mean a person cannot become a lawyer.

Some people genuinely asked,

“But how will he communicate in court?”

That is a fair question.

The answer is simple.

Just as courts provide interpreters for people who speak different languages, sign language interpreters provide communication access for deaf people. Around the world today, technology and accessibility continue to remove barriers that once seemed impossible.

The issue has never been whether Nehemiah can succeed.

His achievement has already answered that question.

The real issue is whether we are willing to change the way we see people.

You see, the Nigerian Law School is not a charity.
Every lawyer earns that privilege through years of study, discipline, sacrifice, examinations, and perseverance.

Nehemiah earned his place.

Not through pity.

Not through favour.

Not through sympathy.

He earned it through hard work.

Never let a barrier convince you that you are incapable.

Sometimes, the challenge is not a person’s ability, but the barriers society places in their way. A ramp can open a door. An interpreter can open communication. An opportunity can change a life.

This week, let’s choose to remove barriers, challenge assumptions, and create opportunities for everyone.

SEEING ABILITY, NOT DISABILITY

There are stories that make you smile.

There are stories that leave you speechless.

And then…

There are stories that expose who we really are as a society.

A few days ago, I came across a video.

At first, I thought it would inspire me.

Instead…

It broke my heart.

Not because of the person in the video.

But because of the comments.

Before I tell you who he is…

Read this.

Thousands of people were reacting.

One person wrote,

“How will he hear the judge?”

Another asked,

“Who will explain the case to him?”

Then someone laughed,

“People who can hear don’t even win cases. What chance does he have?”

But one comment hit the hardest.

“Maybe they called him to the Bar out of pity.”

I froze.

I couldn’t believe people still think this way.

In that moment, I wasn’t thinking about the man in the video.

I was thinking about us.

How quickly we judge.

How confidently we underestimate people.

How easily we see a disability…

…and become blind to ability.

Then I found out who everyone was talking about.

His name is Nehemiah Danjuma.

And what he has achieved will silence every stereotype.

But that’s a story for another day…
