CHAM Facilities Attain High Accreditation under the Ministry of Health Stepwise Quality of Care Programme.

The Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) is pleased to announce a significant milestone in the delivery of quality health services across its facilities.
The Honorable Madalitso Baloyi, Minister of Health, has awarded certificates of accreditation to hospitals and health centres under the Ministry of Health Stepwise Quality of Care (SQoC) Programme during a function held at Crossroads Hotel, Lilongwe. The awards recognize demonstrated improvements in service quality, patient safety, and health systems strengthening.

Out of six assessed CHAM facilities, four have attained an impressive 4-Star Accreditation, namely:
Nkhoma Mission Hospital
Our lady of mount Camel Community Hospital
St John of God Mental Hospital - Mzuzu
St John of God Mental Hospital - Lilongwe

In addition, four CHAM facilities have achieved 3-Star Accreditation out of eleven facilities assessed under the programme. These include:
David Gordon Memorial Hospital at Livingstonia
Mua Mission Hospital
Malamulo Hospital
Mulanje Mission Hospital

This achievement reflects CHAM’s continued commitment to quality improvement, patient-centered care, and alignment with national health standards. The accreditation underscores the dedication of health workers, management teams, and partners who have worked tirelessly to strengthen clinical governance, infection prevention and control, infrastructure, and service delivery systems.

CHAM congratulates all the accredited facilities and commends the Ministry of Health for its leadership in promoting quality of care through the Stepwise Quality of Care Programme. These results mark an important step toward achieving universal access to safe, effective, and high-quality health services in Malawi.

The Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strengthening health facilities and serving vulnerable Malawians, particularly those struggling to access quality care due to critical shortages of essential supplies.

This commitment was underscored during the handover of vital medical supplies valued at K203 million, destined for hospitals in rural and central regions. The donation was made possible through a partnership with Hope and Healing International, whose support CHAM gratefully acknowledged.

Dr. Ann Phoya, CHAM Board Member, emphasized the association's dedication to bridging healthcare gaps. “We understand the profound challenges our health facilities are facing, including acute drug shortages. It is particularly difficult for patients when they are asked to purchase medicines they cannot afford,” stated Dr. Phoya. “This generous support from Hope and Healing International directly addresses these urgent needs, allowing us to extend critical care to those who need it most.”

The supplies are expected to significantly support resources at the Lilongwe District Health Office, Kamuzu Central Hospital, Ntcheu District Hospital, and St John of God facilities.

Receiving the donation on behalf of Kamuzu Central Hospital, Deputy Hospital Director Dr. Carolyn Mwalwanda welcomed the intervention. She noted that government-supplied medicines are often insufficient, especially during periods of high disease burden. “This donation will go a long way in supporting our efforts, particularly at a time when we are managing high cases of diarrhoea and malaria,” Dr. Mwalwanda said.

CHAM continues to work alongside partners like Hope and Healing International and government institutions to build a more resilient and accessible health system for all Malawians.
