CARE Malawi is taking a step towards safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible operations with the introduction of a new eco-driving training programme for its drivers.
Held in Lilongwe on 25–26 July, the training brought together all 13 CARE Malawi drivers for practical and classroom-based sessions covering fuel-efficient driving, road safety, vehicle care, route planning and environmental responsibility.

Eco-driving is about more than saving fuel. By improving driving practices, CARE aims to reduce fuel consumption, vehicle wear and carbon emissions while strengthening road safety and making better use of resources.
The training is part of CARE Malawi’s commitment to safer, greener and more sustainable operations, helping ensure that resources are used responsibly while supporting the delivery of humanitarian and development work.

Every rainy season, the people of Mkhumba village in Phalombe watch the river.
Not because they enjoy the view, but because they know it can change everything.
The Phalombe River gives life to the community. It provides water, supports fishing, and is crossed every day by children on their way to school. But after heavy rains, it can rise without warning, turning into a threat that has claimed lives, swept away livestock, and destroyed homes.

Today, the community doesn't wait for disaster to strike.
With simple river gauges and a trained Village Disaster Risk Management Committee, rising water levels are detected early.

The impact is already visible. Since the gauges were installed, no lives have been lost in the village, and far fewer families have suffered property losses.

This is anticipatory action.
It's not about responding faster after a flood. It's about acting early, using information and local leadership to protect lives before disaster strikes.
Sometimes resilience starts with something as simple as watching the river.

Before the Storm Hits: What is Anticipatory Action?

What if communities could act before a disaster strikes instead of only responding afterwards?

Anticipatory Action means taking early, planned actions based on weather forecasts and risk information to reduce the impact of disasters before they happen. From protecting crops and livestock to safeguarding homes and livelihoods, acting early saves lives, reduces losses, and helps communities recover faster.

Recognizing the importance of being proactive, CARE Malawi, together with partners, supported the Government of Malawi in developing the National Anticipatory Action Framework. This framework provides a coordinated roadmap for early action, helping ensure that vulnerable communities receive timely support before hazards escalate into crises.

Building resilience starts with acting early—because the best time to prepare is before the storm hits.

Last week, through the CARE Malawi team and the support from McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture(USDA) Tiwoloka Project, 324 children's books were donated to the library at Mabvundikira Primary School, one of the schools benefiting from the project. Generously donated by well-wishers and Bishop Mackenzie International School, these books will help strengthen literacy skills, spark curiosity, and foster a lifelong love of reading among learners. Together, we are investing in knowledge, imagination, and brighter futures for every child.

Last Friday, the Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Hon. Joel Chigona, MP, presided over the official handover by CARE Malawi of project assets, marking the successful completion of the Protecting Children's Rights through Labour Prevention and Improved Access to Quality Education in Malawi (PROCLAIM) Project.

During the event, CARE Malawi handed over 11 motorcycles and 30 technology assets, including laptops and tablets, worth approximately USD 112,000 to the Ministry of Labour, Skills and Innovation Malawi and implementing partners. The equipment will strengthen community outreach, monitoring, coordination, data management, and reporting, helping to sustain efforts to protect children from child labour under continued government leadership and local ownership.

Implemented in Mchinji and Ntchisi districts with funding from the ECLT Foundation, the project demonstrated that investing in education, livelihoods, and child protection systems can significantly reduce child labour while improving opportunities for children and their families.

Together with our partners, MicroLoan Foundation and Rays of Hope Malawi, the project achieved important results, including increased school enrolment, improved learner retention and learning outcomes, the successful transition of 929 out-of-school children into formal education, training for 17,280 farmers in climate-smart agriculture, and a reduction in child labour prevalence from 71.1 per cent to 12.4 per cent.
