Empowering Dreams Through Technology: The Story of Mayamiko Fasiyo
Among the many students whose lives have been transformed is Mayamiko Fasiyo, a determined Form 4 student at St. Patricks Secondary School with a growing passion for technology.
Before the introduction of computers at the school, Mayamiko had very limited exposure to digital technology. Like many learners in rural Malawi, he had only heard about computers and seen them in pictures but had never used one himself.
This changed when the school received computer equipment through the digital learning initiative implemented by Computers for Enhanced Education.
“Before the computers came to our school, I did not know how to use a computer at all. I only saw computers in pictures or heard people talking about them. Now I can type documents, use Microsoft Word, and access educational materials through offline digital libraries like Rachel. This has completely changed the way I learn,” says Mayamiko.
The practical exposure has also made learning more engaging, interactive, and enjoyable for students at the school. For students like Mayamiko, access to computers has done more than improving his classroom experience — it has inspired a vision for his future.
“My goal is to study ICT in college and build a career in technology. Having access to these computers has given me hope and confidence that I can achieve my dream,” he says.
Teachers at the school have also observed increased student participation and growing interest in computer studies since the introduction of the digital learning program. More learners are now enrolling in ICT classes, eager to gain practical digital skills that can help shape their futures.
The initiative has also promoted inclusive learning by ensuring that all students, including learners with disabilities, have equal access to digital education opportunities.
Mayamiko’s story reflects the transformative impact that access to technology can have on young people in Malawi. Through the support of Computers for Enhanced Education, students at St. Patricks Secondary School are gaining the knowledge, confidence, and digital skills needed to pursue brighter futures and participate meaningfully in today’s digital world.
